Through hundred bamboo slits I thought I spied white clouds on a dark face.

I lifted the bamboo lattice and saw: the morning sky was clotted with thin dark clouds.

What I took to be white clouds were the few remaining patches of clear sky

and some where behind all that morning murk, the sun is coming.
