What is angular cheilitis ?

Angular cheilitis is the inflammation of the sides of the mouth (labial commissure) following a fungal or a bacterial infection. It is also known as Perleche, angular stomatitis or cheilosis.

Angular cheilitis manifests in the cracking of the corners of the mouth where splits may form and make it difficult for the infected person to eat or speak.

In severe cases the ulcers that form in the sides of the lips can bleed whenever the mouth is opened.

Angular cheilitis and vitamin deficiency :

It has been observed that the people who have a deficiency in iron and in vitamin B2 (Ribovlavin), B3(Niacin), B6 (Pyridoxine) and Vitamin B-12 (Cyanocobalamine) are more vulnerable to this problem.

In fact, these people are more prone to suffering Angular cheilitis attacks following a long exposure to the sun or to the cold wind.

Angular cheilitis and ill-fitting dentures:

People who have lost their teeth and who are using dentures that don't fit properly are also at risk of having this problem.

The reason is that when dentures are not fitting properly, they can cose the over closure of the mouth which creates folds in the sides of the mouth where saliva builds up an creates a moisturized environment that favors fungal and bacterial infections.

Medication for angular cheilitis:

The most widely prescribed medication for angular cheilitis is 1 % hydro cortisone. This treatment can be found in the market under many different names.

Unfortunately, most hydrocortisone-based cream leave a lot to be desired. In fact, most of those who have tried this type of medication have been disappointed by the results they got with it.

Alternative treatments for Angular cheilitis:

The good news though is that the unsightly and painful symptoms of angular cheilitis can be treated easily with alternative treatments.

In fact, there is a way to cure angular cheilitis using nothing more than ingredients that you can easily found on any kitchen or bathroom.
