^FLCL is an anime OVA directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki that made its debut in 2000, being co-produced by Gainax and I.G. Be prepared to watch weird things in FLCL (!) but also to have lots of laughs!

In this completely wacked anime, you'll:

- meet Naota Nandaba, a 12 year old boy, star of the show. At its beginning he's living a monotonous and tedious life. He always tries to look cool so he can be seen as an adult - he tries to role-model his brother Tasuku, who lives in the United States.

- Be run over, whacked in the head with a guitar and sexual harassed constantly from Haruko Haruhara, the most NUTS and hyperactive character I ever saw in an anime.

- Be occasionally possessed and physically transformed into strange shapes from Canti, a Medical Mechanica Robot.

- Get bugged and then despised by Mamimi Samejima, well, basically involve yourself in a weird relationship where you're a kind of replacement to your older brother Tasuku .

- And because a strange thing never comes alone, have another screwy connection to a girl that has problems in controlling her emotions. Yes, I'm talking about Eri Ninamori.

So what is FLCL? What does this letters stand for? Well, some say it's for Fooly Cooly (which doesn't really mean much), others say its furi kuri, which can be translated as breast fondling in japanese (wait isn't that kuri kuri?). Whatever...

At this point in time, you must be thinking: what a weird review, this guy must be crazy! eheh, maybe I am a litlle but I'm just trying to keep up with this great anime.

In the six episodes that it entails you'll never feel bored. The story, albeit a twisted one, just goes on at an incredible pace, but remarkably the authors managed at the same time to develop depth to the charaters, even in such a short series. This is another one of those works that you can't really single out in one genre. It has a great deal of comedy moments, parodying lots of cultural references of the real world, but it's also sad at times, nostalgic and full of drama. I can say that behind all the chaos, there's an underlying theme, and that is about growing up through difficult times and the struggle that it can be (but how important it is that it happens!).

The animation is superb and it's enriched by some bizarre scenes that you normally don't see in an anime and that are portrayed in ever stranger ways - the authors went on the verge of lunacy and made use of several animation styles and scenes that are unusal (at least so many of them together), like stills, elaborate sequences drawn as semi-animated manga, bullet time, black and white, mosaic, etc.

The soundtrack is five stars, featuring some of the best pop/rock songs I ever listenned in a anime. Ride on Shooting Star, by the Pillows, for instance, is a must hear!

To summ it up: another proof that anime is art! Just check it out!

However, there's some differences from the version in japanase and english subs (which I still posted but in links format)- thats because furi kuri makes so many puns on words and cultural references that are hard to translate in english.

So in the former version some of those puns where adapted so that the western viewer can better understand them (and laugh!). It's a personnal taste for you to choose which version you prefer. I viewed both! Enjoy!
