66The End of Evangelion Review
The End of Evangelion is an anime movie made in 1997, with writing and direction by Kazuya Tsurumaki and Hideaki Anno. Considered by many anime fans as the true ending of Neon Genesis Evangelion series, this film depicts basically two alternative final episodes - 25 & 26 - to the original Evangelion Series.
If you watched Neon Genesis Evangelion already you must remember those two final episodes. They we're... strange... Going against the the action-oriented style of the show, the directors ended showing an internal struggle of the main characters with intense psychological nuances regarding the conclusion of the Human Instrumentality Project - and even so the decision Shinji reaches remains dubious, to say the least.
The End of Evangelion
Some say Anno chose to do this final two episodes because she was going through a depression and this kind of self-doubts reflected her own. Others say the main factor for it was budget and schedule related. Hideaki Anno herself says she avoided an "action" ending because of the Sarin gas atack that occurred in Tokyo when the series was being aired, as she feared some images could be too similar to the real-life event.
Whatever the reason, the fact was those two last episodes are very weird and many fans complained about it (some even sent death threats to Anno o.O) and thus End of Evangelion movie was born, it's expectancy scoring some prizes, like the Animage grand prix award of 1997 and that year's academy prize for popularity in Japan.
Of course, I recommend our anime fans not to watch The End of Evangelion before viewing the whole series of Neon Genesis Evangelion - and if you haven't seen that yet, you are missing A LOT - otherwise this movie will be incomprehensible to you.
Heck, even if you saw it, you will be left with some doubts after seeing this one (it's still Evangelion, so expect lots of psychological, philosophical and even religious concepts, mixed in a bag of chaotic imagery and incredibly complex scenes).
I won't put plot spoilers here. Being such a complex work, I expect every person will have a different interpretation after seeing The End of Evangelion - especially the final sequence. It won't please everyone, and I think it never will, no matter how many versions of it they do.
Now grab yourself a seat. Here comes the flick.

Anno actually shows a pictorial of the death threats words in a small image sequence shown in another Evangelion movie, called Death and Rebirth.
My friend Dohn, by all means link it when you make it! I promisse I will link back as well ;) - even if I myself already have an Evangelion hub (I still don't though, I'm a little lazy to see the show again, and it's been so many years I couldn't write a proper review without doing it).
Great anime and good question that nobody:
WHY ARE WE BORN?
but i just cant understand somethings like who is god if there are angels...
Don't have a clue why we are born. But since I'm alive I might as well make the best of it.
Thats my view on it and I think this movie tries to convey that message as well!

Okay, this is perhaps my FAVORITE ANIME of all time, how's that for a response??? Wow, I had no idea that Anno's life was threatened due to the bad taste that was left in the mouths of rabid fans! I never thought doing Anime could be life-threatening! I hope I never write anything that'll get my ass kicked, LMAO! Thanks, Anime_nanet. Hopefully if and when I write my own Neon Genesis Evangelion hub, I'll link it to this hub (if that's cool?).
