Why TV Is Garbage.
65
Why Isn't There Anything Good On!
When was the last time you were channel surfing and didn’t pass by at
least a dozen stations because you weren’t the least bit interested in
what they had to offer? If you belong to the group that enjoys Jon and
Kate Plus 8, you might want to go up to the address bar and type in
TMZ, or just click on another blog to read, because you won’t enjoy
this one.
When exactly was it that television decided to scrap
the idea of programs that are truly entertaining and/or actually make
you think for yourself? I believe the beginning of modern reality TV
was The Real World. In 1991, (long ago, when they played music and long
before “The Hills”) MTV had an idea to put together a half a dozen
twenty-something roommates living in luxurious digs in New York City.
MTV was truly ahead of its time. They had stumbled across the formula
that most “reality” television shows follow today: young, sexy males
and females + confrontations involving every possible controversial
situation = Train Wreck Television. These controversial situations
include, but are not limited to: sex, infidelity, race, fighting,
religion, eating disorders, profane language, alcoholism, drug use,
sexual orientation, and a sprinkling of anything else illegal. You may
be wondering why I renamed reality TV “Train Wreck Television.” It’s
pretty obvious, in that, they hope you are horrified enough to slow
down and rubberneck or even pull over and watch. The Real World was,
and still is, a huge hit within MTV’s target demographic in it's around
the world journey. It's been everywhere from San Fransisco to Sydney
Australia. The video below doesn't have sound for the first 15
seconds, my apologies...
Ratings might have had the execs at MTV excited; it was the bottom line
that truly had them jumping for joy. You have to actually PAY actors
on a sitcom or any other scripted television show. Now while producers
tend to push and even re-film situations in reality television, it’s
not technically scripted. This means that they technically don’t have
to pay the stars of the show, which means more money to go around for
everyone else. This is the very reason that most of TV has turned to
the reality format within the last decade. It’s become the American
way. Fittingly, the new season of The Real World, that will begin
filming shortly, is in our nation’s capital, Washington D.C.
Now reality TV has been around in some shape or from for many decades,
there were never more than a couple shows on the air at once. There
were a few shows that dabbled with the concept throughout t the 90’s,
and it the form was growing slightly, but it never really caught on
until just before the end of the 20th century, with Survivor. This is
she show that showed the major networks that this type of television
could get HUGE ratings. It’s a shame, because I actually enjoyed that
first season. It was a unique concept that we’ve all talked/heard
about from time to time: getting stuck on a deserted island. It had
democracy, games, huge arguments, alliances, confessionals, eating
weird stuff, faked isolation from the outside world, prizes, and the
last man/woman standing grand prize. Each of these ideas has become a
staple of all the current reality show categories. There are a few
shows that seem to belong to all of them, but at their core each show
belongs to one of four groups.
Game Shows
Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with the traditional game
show. I grew up watching The Family Feud, Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy,
The Price is Right, and The $25,000 Pyramid along with others. I still
thoroughly enjoy a large majority of them today and don’t clump them in
with reality television. And as I said, I enjoyed Survivor when it first came out.
What I don’t enjoy is a dozen or more seasons of Survivor, Big Brother (if Survivor and The Real World had a baby), The Amazing Race, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire, and America’s Next Top Model. I have no idea who’s watching these shows. Ratings say that millions are every week, so what are the producers going to do? Pump out season after season until they can’t anymore. Stars of these shows are typically fresh faces, not at all like the next category.
Celeb-Reality
A little biased here: I hate these types of shows. These “celebrities” have recently inundated the entertainment market. But that’s the thing, they’re not celebrities you’d actually WANT to watch. If Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise made a show, I’d watch. But instead, Kathy Griffin, Paris Hilton, Ozzy Osbourne, Hulk Hogan, and Kim Kardashian are all over the airwaves. Turn on E!, Vh1, MTV, Bravo, hell, just about any cable channel, and you'll find your fix of mindlesss celebrity watching. The Anna Nicole Show can at least be partially blamed for Anna Nicole Smith’s death. Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson have also blamed their former series as leading to their divorce.
Even though they weren’t really celebrities until the ratings told everyone they were, this is where I lump shows like The Hills and Laguna Beach together. These shows are rumored to be scripted and sure as hell isn’t anyone’s reality, but just like The Blair Witch Project masqueraded around as real, these count as reality. Apparently if you’re the offspring of very rich parents you get to star a television show.
This is also the category where I put the abomination known as John and Kate Plus 8. Currently, you can’t pick up a magazine, go to a website, listen to the radio, or pretty much anything else but hang out in the woods without hearing about this show. Kate is famous because she spit out 8 kids and Jon is famous because he’s the husband. That’s it! Fully-grown women around the nation want Kate’s haircut and US Weekly can’t get enough information about their possible divorce. Why do we care about these people? Why do we care about any of these “celebrities” for that matter? We shouldn't be looking up to or idolizing these people....
Self/Home- Improvement
As it says in the title, there are two definitive subcategories of improvement.
The first of two definitive subsections in this division is self-improvement. Any show involving weight loss, plastic surgery, makeovers (clothes/make-up), rehabilitation, manners, and swapping of family members finds a home here. The Biggest Loser stands head and shoulders above the others. It sort of skews the borders and can be put into any of the four categories. It fits the game show format because there is a definitive winner at the end after an arduous journey, but it can be said that everyone’s a winner due to what it teaches everyone involved. At the center of The Biggest Loser is the great message to get and stay healthy, and that’s a message America desperately needs. What America doesn’t need is The Swan. Are you not happy with how you naturally look? Then just get a ton of plastic surgery until your stretched-out face and body looks how you want it to. Other examples of these types of shows include Celebrity Rehab, Tool Acadamy, Supernanny, and Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.
Now it’s obvious that the second subsection is Home Improvement. This one’s pretty simple. If your show has someone decorating or renovating/building a home or vehicle, you belong here. The first ever in this section was This Old House in 1979 featuring Bob Villa. Modern incarnations include Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, While You Were Out, and Pimp My Ride. Now our final category….
Love Connections
Yes, I named this after the old game hosted by Chuck Woolery. If you’re trying to hook people up on dates, finding them love, competing for love, or anything else similar to that, this is where you go for it. The Dating game pioneered this concept in the 60’s. Producers what confrontation or something to do with sex, it’s basically straightforward for any viewer. This is an old, but relatively limited section.
I also placed the show Cheaters here. Now anyone’s that’s seen it knows there isn’t any love here, but there is a ton of anti-love. It IS about relationships and the instances of infidelity that occur within them. Modern examples include Blind Date, Room Raiders, Elimidate, Next, and Parental Control. MTV usually dominates this area today, and let's say that brains aren't exactly needed...
That sums up where you put all these so-called reality shows. We all know these are NOWHERE near reality, but millions and millions of us continue to watch. One can only hope that this trend is just a fad, but it’s a fad that’s lasted for over a decade now. It’s infiltrated every part of the very psyche of pop culture. I crave the not-so-old days of good TV dramas and sitcoms ruling the airwaves. While they’re not dead, they’re getting harder and harder to find on free television.
I’ll leave you with this, turn on HBO and Showtime if you’re interested in quality original and scripted programming. The Tudors, Weeds, Californication, Dexter, Eastbound And Down, True Blood, and Curb Your Enthusiasm are just a taste of what they have to offer. I swear this is not a commercial for the two cable networks, it’s just “reality” (I’m sorry, ha) that basic cable and network television doesn’t have much to offer anymore. I’d love for another Seinfeld or Cheers to come along, in fact I’m hoping for it. For the record, I thoroughly enjoy The Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother on CBS on Monday nights. I’m such a sell out....

Wow, skinsman, for a debut, this is really good stuff. I quit watching tv about 3 years ago, also disgusted by the poor offerings, though I, too, enjoyed a couple of sitcoms and actually, liked American Justice and those type of shows about murders. I thought they were well done. You write very well and have put this together nicely. I am a fan.
BkCreative- I used to watch a larger majority of these shows than I'd like to admit. Now I seem to have more time on my hands since I do not. I didn't realize how little quality there really was. Maybe I'll just have to write more too.
Connie Smith- Well thank you very much for the praise. Oh how I crave it, ha. I enjoy the real world if I like the cast(VERY occasionally). I watch reality here and there. I think it comes down to people's voyeuristic tendancies...and maybe back to our days in ancient rome. We can give it a thumbs up or thumbs down....mostly down. Again, thanks.
You said it skinsman! Good television is so so hard to find. I too would like to see a revival of dramas, especially ones that don't have to do with the most bizarre murders you've ever heard of. And that goes for all the hospital dramas too. I get sick of all the sickness.
Any way, I must admit I do like American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. At least on these shows the contestants have to have some kind of talent.
Good piece.
Wow, you're dead on with this hub, although I must confess- my wife and I still watch Survivor! I agree...everyone seems to be wondering "when will they ever stop"...we wonder the same thing.
But they continue with the seasons and we continue to enjoy watching!
Cindy Letchworth-Thanks, and you're right, there are a lot of hospital dramas. House is good but I wish they'd switch it up other than the same "ok, he/she has something weird, let's run a bunch of tests then wait for House to magically figure it out."
WeddingConsultant- Thanks. We all get sucked in to shows on occasion. Just be glad you're not on the edge of your seat watching "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" haha.
Great Hub.
Welcome to HubPages - great hub. I never got into Survivor, even though all my friends were glued to the set when it first aired - I do watch some TV, mostly crime dramas or a good old fashioned murder mystery lol...which are always good for the times my brain is numb and I don't want to think (kids will do that to ya :P)
thanks you two. It sure seems like a lot of people like crime dramas. That makes sense. There are 1 or 2 on tv ;-)
There is very little major network primetime I watch anymore. You're right, it's nothing but garbage. I instead find myself watching TvLand reruns, Discovery, History, etc. - all those channels that just a few years ago I made fun of my parents for watching.
My guess is this: if you're over the age of 25 or older, you're not the target audience. I gathered that from the fact that my 17 year old son, LOVES all the shows we hate.
hahaha....you summed it up perfectly I believe.
This is a great first Hub. I am biased because I totally agree with you but also because its is constructed so well. UK TV is full of repeats, reality TV and basically crap. Its good, in some ways, to know that American TV is as bad. Sorry
Welcome to the hubisphere - you sure have started off with a bang! I have to agree with Kim - when we do watch TV it's usually Nickelodeon for the kids or National Geographic or Discovery or something of that nature - or we rent a movie. Prime time is awful!
where are all the pro-reality comments. People are watching this stuff...I guess that's why they're not online.
I agree with you all the way. America has only surface glitz and has not one ounce of quality unless you hunt and peck piece of this show or that this network or that. That being said, my wife would absolutely kill me if I even thought to turn the TV from "The Biggest Loser" and I seem to have taken a liking to "I Survived A Japanese Game Show". Now every fan I have will take themselves off my site with one resounding click!!! Great first hub. You're not going to un-click me are you?
Oh My Gosh! Jessica Simpson: Tunafish. Give me a break. Was that scene on purpose? I really can't even watch these shorts on your page. Sickening. The worst part about TV are the commercial breaks. But, after watching these clips, maybe the commercials are the best part of TV. :-)
I very RARELY watch TV. Complete waste of time.
Good hub!
have to agree. I barely watch tv and when I do it's docos like on NGC or ID or arts on Bravo or A&E, news or movies. I am always behind on which celebrity is who and I couldn't name the Friends, then or now.
I find that when they do put a good tv show on it either gets cancelled after the first season or they shove some other crap in it's place, I'm a great fan of genre shows like lost, supernatural, doctor who to name a few and it is these that I only watch and all the reality shows can just die for all I care, who wants to watch people chat shite all night while they revel in the self importance around the cameras!!!
thanks for all the comments. And don't worry "no body," I won't un-click you.
Very nice hub! I also hate all these kinds of programmes. I used to watch Big Brother back when reality TV was still a novelty, but now there's just too much and I'm sick of it.
And the celebrity market is being flooded with all these reality "stars". It would be really good if we could turn back time to before anyone realised what a profitable idea reality TV was, and somehow stop it from happening!
Stop the moaning. At least you don't pay the best part of $300 a year licence fee to the BBC!
Really, UK TV is not all it's cracked up to be - and in Big Brother we have possibly the worst reality show ever. Truly, deeply, awful.
Excellent first hub I look forward to reading more from you
Man great hub.. I like your style!
Great hub and spot on. There is too much garbage on TV. If people keep watching, they're going to keep making a series of that show (which might make sense financially). The sad part is... people keep watching! WTF?! Don't we have anything better to do with our lives?! Every now and then you get a cool show that is a little bit different but they are few and far between.
If this great first hub is an indication of more to come, I can't wait to read them! You have summed up the sad state of television perfectly.
You are right, TV is brain damaging tool. Europeans thinking we are crazy. Good hub. Welcome.
i find myself saying "there is nothing on TV.." more often these days. :-)
Good points. Months back I transferred my TV set to the living room. Now all I do is go to you tube and pick out videos that really matter to me. Thanks and thumbs up!
Young man, the other day I watched a new show called THE PHILANTROPIST. Not bad at all.
Also, there's New York's CHANNEL 13. Good stuff there. Charlie Rose, the Brits on Saturday evenings, then almost 6 hours of good movies -classics, shorts and indies. And lots of extra ordinary reporting.
That's it. I don't usually watch TV. Oh I'm sorry, I was forgetting 2 men and 1/2.
Don't despair
GREAT FIRST HUB
WELCOME TO HUBPAGES.
Wow super debut into HP I do say :)
This is really great start for a hub :) My local TV shows in Indonesia are tiring too, just watch some cartoons with my daughter and local news, another shows are sucks (like never ending soap operas (dramas), boring reality shows, celebrity gossips, and etc). I used to go to Youtube to find the videos I really like and internet of course.
Nice comment about TV in general. I pretty much hate everything on TV, but there are some diamonds in the rough - I suppose. In any case, I transferred my TV from the living room to the closet. I keep it in case of I don't know what, but I do have some videos I intend to transfer myself to DVD, so it may find some use other than taking up precious closet space.
I agree totally. About the only thing we watch is local news, mostly for the weather and sports. College and pro football. Big football fans here. Most of the crap that's on TV is targeting what we refer to as "the brains full of mush" audience. But, look at it as one less thing that drains your time. Gives you more time to do important stuff.
We took to hiding in the travel channel and the food channel but now they are taking the same route. Who wants to watch someone eat cow's eyes or whatever and the newest guy getting bit and stung by anything that will. That's how I want to spend my vacation!!!!!!
The only "reality" show I watch is whatever golf tournament is on on Sunday afternoon! Other than that, I avoid reality shows like the plague. Don't understand anyone who does. Puhleese. I rarely turn on the the TV, so when I do I watch something that exercises my brain cells, not dumb them down. To me, PBS, Discovery, and the History Channel are good books that I can watch. Reality shows are right down there with coloring books. No thank you.
you are so right there aren't any good one but I wud prefer to watch one which gives you instant entertainment like America's got talent or so you think you can dance 2 but never get hooked shows like the bachelor or a bachelorette I really don't understand how the hell they can date so many person at the same time I watch one season than I am done after the Jason Melissa episode.
Katherine, I too am a HUGE fooball fan, along with most sports. That's the direction I'll be going with my next hub I'm pretty sure. I'm easing into this hubpages thing like an old man into a warm bath. Bonus points to whoever can figure out what sitcom that's referencing, haha.
I didn't realize so many people felt so strongly about this. I have to say that I'm pleasantly surprised to say the least. Thanks for all the comments! :-)
Here's one more 'agree' vote on the state of TV. The news locally is about as bad too. I do watch the weather here because it is always changing...! Thanks for your observant, mature, well-done comments! It seems we'll all wait for more good hubbing from you!
Wow, where do I start? I like to watch true crime shows, always a good movie, preferably an old one and two competetive shows, Top Chef and Project Runway. What ticks me off is these channels will come out with some decent stuff, run with it for a few years, then poof! they're gone. I have no use for Jon & Kate Plus 8, am sick of the ad nauseum news about octo-mom, or any of the shows that show families with way too many kids. I just read in the news today a couple in Florida were killed, parents of 16 children. They said it was a home invasion, but who knows? Maybe some nut sick of people flaunting how many kids they have? My thought about couples who feel the need to spit out kids like a rabbit does, is have them, but adopt them out to parents who cannot have their own kids. At least the child would have a much better chance at a good life that way.
Anyway, back to tv. I used to love Third Watch, I felt the acting was really good on that show, so I've taken to recording the re-runs. I also love the old sitcoms, I Love Lucy, The Golden Girls, Cheers. I could watch those a million times and never tire of it.
I also occasionally like a game show or something on one of the discovery channels.
Welcome to HubPages!
I do not watch a lot of TV, but when I do it is not reality. I will watch movies, but the only show I really watch is Heroes. I can't wait for it to start up again! Great Hub! :D
Great hub, quite agree, TV is rubbish, thats why my entertainment comes from here.
What Hawdesdream said. I even gave up cable when A&E dropped the mystery series. Now it is hubbing or books.
Two thumbs up for the great hub.
Great first hub!
We are in the TV dark ages, here - just the 4 terristrial channels, BBC1, BBC2, ITV, and Channel 4.
good point..thats another reason online communities grow at astonishing rate.
I like football on Sundays and that Is about It ! TV has been brain pollution for years and MTV Is responsible for dumbing down so many young people their execs should be Imprisoned ! Good hub . So now to everybodys detriment I loiter here at hubpages alot !
haha. you summed it up perfectly for me tony0724. My Sundays are full of football and (gasp!) fantasy football in the Fall/Early Winter. And yes, it's mostly MTV's fault. Or at least they thought of it first...
I agree, but I still get sucked into reality TV
I agree with you that tv is a bore. That's why I hardly watch and I ditched the news too while I was at it. I read a lot instead. Good hub.

Yes, it's bad, really bad.
So I am thinking, hmmmmm - less TV watching - more writing. For me this is the silver lining. (I admit I am addicted to the judge shows, which I am watching as I write this - and Family Guy - but I have it under control). I can't bring myself to pay for cable. In the early days it was supposed to be commercial free - but that's a joke. So I shall write now, write more hubs and maybe short stories and great novels and I have an idea for a screenplay and then I'll become incredibly prosperous etc...yes, this is the good thing about bad tv - we may do something else with our lives. Maybe.
