Anorexia nervosa is a psychosomatic disorder in which self inflicted starvation leads to an devastating loss of weight. It occurs mainly to well to do girls. This girls affected with this disorder have a pathological fear of being fat, which leads to a relentless pursuit of excessive slimness coupled with an intense interest in food. Severe personality problems are usually common with girls affected with this disorder. The typical patient is overcompliant in childhood, thus inadequately prepared for adolescense and independence. Excessive control over weight to the point of starvation represents an effort to establish a sense of selfhood and autonomy. Starvation, in return creates its own physiological and psychological symptoms and complication.

Usually girls with this disorder will abstain from eating food and will alternately it too much, which are followed by efforts to remove the unwanted food through self induced vomiting, intake of laxatives and diuretics. These practices may result in electrolyte imbalance and at time will have a fatal outcome.

Anorexic gives a first impression of being active and strong, but they suffer from a paralyzing sense of ineffectiveness. They gain sense of accomplishment from controlling their weight and depression when they regain the weight.

Symptoms of Anorexia :

  • Total loss of desire to eat
  • Serious weight loss
  • Lack of appetite
  • Weak reflexes
  • Hair loss due to lack of proteins and nutrients
  • Vomiting
  • Ceasing of menstrual cycle
  • Low blood pressure

Recommended Treatment for Anorexia:

  1. Some doctors recommend taking mega dosages of multi-vitamins and multi-minerals. Consultation to a psychiatrist or counselor is also recommended.
  2. If person becomes thinner each day, continues losing hair, and does not respond to treatments, it could be a very dangerous condition. Consult your physician immediately.
