Anti Aging Products
54As time passes, the aging process eventually becomes an inevitable reality for everyone. Yet there are many examples of men and women who have managed to seemingly indefinitely delay most, if not all, visible signs of aging, and these examples seem to be increasingly common. Wrinkles, age spots, blemishes, and fine lines, all of these used to be the unavoidable result of age, but now - with all of the new advancements and exciting new developments in anti aging skin care products - there are many reasons to believe that this is no longer true. With so many different products available, however, it can be extremely difficult to know where to start in search of a healthy, more youthful looking appearance. There are a bewildering array to choose from, many of which target and treat different forms of damage caused by aging, and it's important to determine which kind of product will be the most effective.
Anti Aging Creams
The most common type of anti aging product is the standard moisturizing cream. Facial moisturizers have long been what most people call to mind when they think of skin care, and there are many brands to choose from, from the high end to the easily affordable. Not all anti aging creams are equally effective, however. Many of the more common varieties are little more than moisturizers, and many consumers incorrectly assume that these alone will reduce the effects of aging.
Moisturizers Are Not Enough
Because dry skin is as much a part of aging as wrinkles and fine lines, some people have mistakenly believed dry skin to be the underlying cause of wrinkles, and therefore assume that rehydrating the affected skin will remove the problem. This is unfortunately untrue. While keeping one's skin properly moisturized is important to maintaining healthy skin, the only way for an anti aging cream to successfully minimize wrinkles is for the product to contain the necessary ingredients, such as retinoids, glycolic acid, alpha-lipoic acid or other antioxidants.
Antioxidants: Protecting The Skin From Within
There has been a great deal of recent discussion in the media regarding the astonishing healing properties of antioxidants. Antioxidants have been discovered to be beneficial in reducing the risk of many forms of cancer, increasing longevity, boosting the immune system, and of course in fighting the effects of aging upon all cells in the body. What, exactly, are antioxidants? An antioxidant is any substance that reduces the damage caused by "free radicals." Put simply, free radicals are unstable cells that damage all the healthy cells they interact with. Antioxidants neutralize these free radicals, stopping cell damage before it starts. Eating foods rich in antioxidants, such as certain fruits and vegetables like broccoli and red grapes, are a simple and natural way reverse the effects of aging. For damage requiring a more rigorous treatment, there are creams and serums containing powerful antioxidants that can be directly applied to the skin.
Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion has achieved a certain popularity due to its affordability, particularly when compared with chemical peels, and the easily available products that consumers may purchase. There has been some confusion regarding the process of microdermabrasion, with many people considering it similar or equivalent to a chemical peel. This is simply not the case. Microdermabrasion is not an effective anti aging skin product. Unlike chemical peels, which remove the outer layers of the damaged skin and significantly reduce the appearance of lines or wrinkles, microdermabrasion only cleans away dead skin cells. While many people praise the pink flush it gives the skin, considering it a "youthful glow," it does not, in fact, reduce the appearance of wrinkles or minimize the effects of aging in any way.
Chemical Peels
While some anti aging products focus primarily on diminishing the damage caused to the skin at the cellular level, others take a different approach altogether and seek instead to remove the damaged skin rather than heal it. It sounds drastic, but one such procedure is the chemical peel. The results are visibly noticeable and, depending on how extensive the treatment is, quite effective. For a chemical peel, the product is painted onto the face in a thin, even layer, which results in the removal of the outermost - and thus most damaged - layer of skin. Chemical peels vary in severity, depending on how many layers of skin one wishes removed, and most of these must be performed by a trained dermatologist.
Products For Prevention
Some of the most effective anti aging products are those that prevent the damage from occurring in the first place. An important example of this kind of anti aging skin care product is sunscreen. UV rays penetrating through layers of skin over several years can cause untold damage to one's skin cells, increasing the risk for cancer and hastening the aging process. Simply remembering to use sunscreen will ensure a more youthful appearance and a longer life.
