Many anti aging skin treatments contain vitamin A derivatives such as retinol and tretinoin. These are small molecules that can easily penetrate the epidermis (the top layer of the skin) to reach the deeper levels below where collagen and elastin are found. Collagen supports the skin and prevents sagging and elastin keeps the skin elastic. Both of these molecules are damaged by the sun's rays and by aging. Retinol repairs the damage, which results in firmer skin which is more elastic with less lines and wrinkles. As the skin ages it becomes drier as the cells in the skin produce less sebum. The vitamin A derivatives increase the natural oils in the skin and help to decrease dryness.

Vitamin A Derivatives

One of the most common ingredients for antiaging skin treatments is retinol which is a pure form of vitamin A. Retinol has been shown to be effective in the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles by clinical trials. It has also been shown that it increases the oils in the skin. Also available in prescription anti aging skin treatments is another form of vitamin A called tretinoin which is stronger but has more side effects. It is available in products such as Retin-A, Avita and Renova A.

Side effects

Some side effects of anti-aging skin treatments containing retinol are redness, itching, irritation or stinging. These should be mild and only last for a day or two. If you are using antiaging skin treatments containing tretinoin you may have stronger side effects and these treatments should only be used when under the care of a dermatologist. All of these products increase the sensitivity of the skin to the rays of the sun so you should always use a high factor sunscreen when using them.

Glycolic Acid
Glycolic Acid

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) that is extracted from sugar cane. AHA's have been used for a long time to soften, moisturize and exfoliate the skin. Glycolic acid has been shown to help reduce the number of fine lines and wrinkles on the face and works by reducing inflammation and loosening dead skin cells which can then be easily removed. This leaves the skin looking smoother and younger. Glycolic acid is found in anti-aging skin treatments including creams, serums, lotions and gels.

Glycolic Acid Peels

Chemical peels are used to remove the top layer of skin leaving the skin looking smoother and younger. Glycolic acid peels are the mildest form of chemical peel and are more gentle on the skin than many others. They are available over-the-counter. However if this is the first time you are using a chemical peel it is recommended to consult a healthcare practitioner or dermatologist to make sure it is suitable for your skin. Peels containing glycolic acid can be used to treat wrinkles, age spots and dry areas and to improve the appearance of skin damage by acne.

Side Effects

Side effects are mild for antiaging treatments containing glycolic acid and include redness and irritation that should last only a day or two. Side effects of peels are more drastic and the irritation and redness may last longer. If you are also using products containing retinol this can result in increased irritation to the skin so take care if you are using any of these products in combination.
