Any Ideas for the Economy?

I've got a few...

You know what is so ironic? We have millions of talented people who can't find a job, and we have a whole market of people who have their wants and needs, yet there's no economy to support it. Why is that? How hard can it be for the government to assure people that after undergoing all their education and schooling that they are worth something, and can become something?

Problem 1: Inexperienced People cannot Gain Experience

I went through all my education to get an undergrad's accounting degree, and the only position available for someone without "accounting experience" is anything but accounting. Some businesses don't want to hire people who don't have experience, even if it's entry-level jobs, because they don't have the resources to train them. And the reason they don't have a resource of trainers is because it costs more money than to hire someone who already knows what they're doing.

This, in my opinion, hurts the economy more than it helps. When businesses weasel their way out of hiring more people, it shrinks opportunities available for those who can demonstrate potential. How many job openings could there be if all medium-large businesses were required to have trainers? I can't count the number of times that I was trained by a manager or assistant, and even though they are great trainers, there were several employees who would've done just as well. They might even be more enthusiastic because it gives them a chance to show leadership of some sort.

...The average full-time employed American works 70hrs per week.  That is more than any nation in the world.  We get less vacation and sick leave than any industrialized nation in the world.  And they say there are no job positions available... Maybe it's because our over-worked citizens are too busy working to let anyone else in on the job. Furthermore, there are no regulations to distribute a company's percentage of income between the CEO's paycheck from the employees' paycheck.

Why should one person get paid millions while the thousands of employees get paid minimum wage?  I'm not saying that everyone should be paid the same amount, but if there's minimum wage, why isn't there a maximum? Is it really necessary for someone to earn $500m per year?  How does ONE PERSON earning that much benefit the economy?  Some people have so much money that don't know where to save it to earn more money!

Anyway, there's one idea: medium-large businesses should have assigned trainers, and non-managerial jobs should not be limited to people who have experience. Managerial positions that require over 60hrs of work should have two people working the position, not one.

Problem 2: Consumers Take on More Debt than they can Pay

Also, there's this group of people who are in so much debt that it will take them "forever" to get out of it. Who wants to live like that? Sure, the results are all about risk, but where are the consultants who can discuss those issues to INDIVIDUALS? Yeah, I understand, we have bankers, but do you know what bankers do? I do, after all, I AM ONE.

There's this federal regulation that requires bankers to NEVER discourage someone for applying for a loan. I understand the concept behind it, however, the consequences behind it are larger than the benefits. By making sure that banks cannot discourage people from applying for a loan ensures that nobody suffers from discrimination or a chance to reach an opportunity. However, is someone is unemployed, receiving no income, and has delinquent accounts, it is obvious they are not going to get approved for a $5000 loan.

Of course, we can't tell the customer that. We have to say, "I will be happy to provide an application for you." Even if the customer asks, "Do you think I have a chance to get approved?", we have to say, "Sure you do." or "I'm not sure until we fill out the forms." After pulling their credit report, which lowers their score even more, and therefor, decreases their chance of getting a loan if they apply for a lesser amount, they don't get approved.

As bankers, we want people to get approved, because it is classified as a profit; if the loan is paid back, the bank receives those interest payments. Banks face the risk that people will not pay back their debt, and since people are losing their jobs, and spending less, and hurting business who are trying to sell, the chance of anyone paying back their debt has decreased drastically. And now, banks are tight on their money because the chance of someone unable to pay off their debt is greater than someone who will.

A lot of people are trying to get a loan just to pay their bills. Some people try to consolidate their debt by getting a loan with a lower interest rate than what they are paying on their credit cards. However, in many cases, the interest rate has gone up so much that banks' current loans are offering interest rates that are higher than what the person is paying now.

...and this creates a problem for businesses, and consumers pay the price

Furthermore, new businesses and entrepreneurs can't get a loan, and new businesses are exactly what this economy needs. How is the economy suppose to get out of a recession if there are no businesses opening up? As for the businesses who have already established themselves, why is it OK for them to take on more debt before paying off their current debt, and then raise prices of their products?

It's basically making the price of the good higher than its value. Consumers are spending that kind of money for something that is worth so much less, all for the business debt? When the economy was booming, there were all these services for businesses, but no leverage for consumers.

Another Problem: Tax Funding Procedures

Now, the consumers need more help than ever, and there are no business opportunities to provide sufficient income. Why is the government so focused on raising taxes that hurt our income, and also hurt businesses to provide jobs? Where are the tax benefits for businesses who spend money to help the environment, who provide millions of people affordable, healthy products, who expand on job opportunities?

I heard on the news that the government wants to raise taxes on fast-food products, to decrease the demand for fast-food. Why not decrease the tax on healthy food, so that it costs the same as fast-food? If the government raises the tax on fast-food, then that will make it less affordable for people to BUY food. If people spend less, then others EARN less income, which decreases the income-to-tax ratio, which decreases the government's earnings for tax.

A BIG Problem: The Government Failed to provide Social Services in Need

Then there are the other services that have been short handed for a long time... Where are the affordable family and school services? Why are teachers getting punished for having a classroom of students who don't care about school because they come from undisciplined families? Why do students have to undergo 16 years of school plus two years of experience before they are considered available for a career? How is it that students have wants and needs for technology and information, plus a roof over their head, yet they need mommy and daddy to pay for some/all of it? How come there's a social class of people who have all this "stuff", and then there's a class of people who don't even know how to turn on a computer?

What happened to our police force, our environmental force, our FAIR law force... who is in charge of the check and balances for these people? Then of course there's that other problem with the health care system...lets not get into that.

The Snowball Effect Starts

There's an opportunity to become a nation of one, where everyone should have an equal chance, where people can utilize the skills they develop, and yet there are no programs to start the process. There are no free class programs to teach senior citizens how to use a computer, or even a debit card for that matter. There are no class programs to teach adults how to save up for retirement; it is up to them to learn on their own, or through their family members. There are no programs to help young adults establish credit and spend responsibly; that is also left up to whatever family they come from.

Our primary identity comes from our family background, yet there are little services available to help with common family problems.  Counseling alone can do wonders, but those services are also expensive.  When there are family problems, children cannot focus on school, and adults cannot focus on work nor their children.  There is no program that prevents parents from turning into alcoholics, abusers, or irresponsible.  A child who comes from a loving family has a much better chance to succeed than a child who doesn't, and nobody gets to choose their parents. How is that fair for children to be judged simply by their GPA?

There are so many programs that need to be in place, yet they aren't, and all the while there are well-qualified people who don't have a job or career...

The Great Depression of the 1930s lasted 10 years and ended when WWI started.  Because of the high demand for military expansion and supplies, jobs opened and pulled the U.S. out of a depression.  Today, we are already in a war, and another world war would not be a good idea.  Now that nuclear weapons exist, we can't get into a war to pull us out of this problem.

There's no doubt that we need government help, but there's no room to waste our tax money.  Something needs to change, and I haven't heard any of the Congressmen discuss any of these issues that could be solved AND provide jobs. If our economy had a system for the inexperienced to find a job, to make sure consumers aren't paying the price of ridiculous amounts of debt, and provided suffient tax funding in areas that can provide job service, then perhaps our economy would be a lot more stable than it is today.  What's your opinion?

The Economy

When do you think the economy will be out of this recession?

  • Within 1 year or so
  • 2-5 years
  • 5-10 years
  • More than 10 years
  • Never. This country is going to end.
  • ...the world is going to end.
