Any chance you could come up with a beginning teacher checklist that outlines the top ten things each new teacher...
66Well, coming up with a list of ten things a new teacher should know by the end of the first week is kind of a tough one. Because it depends on what grade level you are teaching. Without knowing that information I would go for a basic list such as:
1) Have all the students names memorized by the end of the week.
2) Know where every child sits in the classroom. (this one would be easier if the seating chart was created by the teacher).
3) Know what skills they have already learned. Such as were each student stands as far as reading, writing, math.
4) If any of your students have had trouble with school in the past.
5) Find an interesting way to hold their attention while you are trying to teach them. (try and make it fun!)
6) Find out which students have trouble speaking in front of the class, find a way for them to improve it, and try and make it more comfortable for them as well.
7) What supplies you will be using, if you require any of your students to bring supplies, its always best to let them know well in advance.
8) If any of your students have a learning disability, that way you can accommodate them.
9) Which students cannot be seated together, because they can't focus on learning because they would rather be talking to each other.
10) What time lunch is!!!

Great list! Thanks for your insight. I've found that if students create little name tents that they decorate, it helps me learn their names much more quickly.
Again, thanks for the list!
Interesting Article...Do you think paying teachers more will help the quality of education students receive? I just ran accross a blog at http://www.PayTeachersMore.com that talks about it. What are your thoughts? I think if teachers are paid more, you'll get good people to stay in the profession.
Thanks and keep on Posting

Great ideas! I think it is useful that most of your items are focused on getting to know the students right from day 1. Hopefully all of the logistical preparations are done before the first day of school, so the students can be the focus!
