Legislation affords you the right to a free credit report annually, so grab yours, and go through it line by line. A large percentage of credit reports have mistakes on them, so even if you're "clean", it may not appear that way on the report. You have thirty days from the date of issue to lodge complaints, and submit proof of mistakes. Simple things like a payment that was received, but given up as not, can be a bad reflection, and has to be sorted out before it stands in your way. If you submit proof of any inaccurate or misleading information, the credit bureau is obliged to remove it from your report.

If you have any collections outstanding, try to settle them if possible. If not, try to come to an arrangement with the collection agency, and be sure to have that in writing. Collections that are not paid, or at least have an agreement in place, could create the wrong impression, and fail your application for apartment rental. Credit repair is essential in this case. Also make an effort to verify that payments made after reaching the agreement are noted on your credit report. If not, lodge a dispute, submitting proof.

If you have any accounts past their due date, remedy that, and once again, verify that the information is updated. It is advised to start the process about six months before you intend to apply for a new apartment rental. Credit repair can take some time, so be sure to afford yourself enough. By the time you file an application, you will be able to provide proof of payment in the case of arrears, and the inaccuracies on your report will be sorted out.
