Thanks Ralph. The real horror of the Iraq war is that we have created a whole new generation of real terrorists. I am also ashamed that four years ago, the election was all about getting out of Iraq. Now, four years later, no one seems to be interested in leaving. Polls say that 80% of Americans are opposed to the war, yet none of the candidates seems too intent on ending this thing anytime soon. There is too much money involved.
This Illegal War is now now an American Institution.
What are we gonna do?
Many Americans and American "leaders" are under the false assumption that we need most of the world to supply us with our "needs". Many of the "needs" are really just "wants". We are an overconsuming society. We have the capability to be self-sufficient or nearly so. Why should we continue to rely on so many other countries for resources? We have resources right here but we ship all we have out to other countries, even so called "enemy" countries like China. Much of the Middle East is also our "enemy" yet we do big business with them. I hate to sound regressive but we need to take several steps back, maybe about five decades back, to when we produced AND bought our resources. We MUST stop the overconsumption. Otherwise, we'll continue to depend on too many other countries. My point relates to one of your other hubs. It IS all about the oil in the middle east. But what happens when we run out of room for corn for ethanol, or whatever, because eventually we'll use too much of that, also. We are supposed to be the caretakers of the earth, not its abusers. With limited resources in everything, we must have self-control over our "wants". People want to get out of Iraq, but they don't want to turn in their 375 horse power SUV for a honda civic, or even a good old station wagon that probably gets 10 or 15 miles more to the gallon. The thing is, most people really don't give a shit in this country, at least in the metro areas where there is money. Our government is fighting a war for all the overconsuming Americans who want, want, want everything they see on TV. If we didn't want it and use it, there would be less of a demand for it, and less need to go elsewhere to get it, at any cost. It starts with us. Sorry for being so lengthy. Great hub.
I really appreciate your articles and your commitment to getting the point across, visibly.
I don't have a car, because no-one should die so that I can have oil.
wonderful pix--great hub. How many days is it now since Bush declared "mission accomplished?"BTW,adventure, Jimmy Carter warned us about our dependence on foreign oil in the '70's and implemented lots of programs to make us self sufficient. Nobody listened and here we are in the mess he predicted.
Make sure you cast your votes wisely.
You got out of Vietnam, you can get out of Iraq.

Great job, James! What a horrible mess we made. A happy ending is not in store for Iraq nor for the United States. We should not allow ourselves to be fooled by the alleged success of the Bush surge. (I wish it success, but I don't expect it to work. It's just delaying the inevitable sad ending for all concerned allowing Bush to pass it on to his successor.)
