Gratitude - A Powerful Emotion
62Where Does It Come From
Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions we can have. From an early age we are taught to say thank you, when receiving something. Thank you is one way of showing gratitude. But do we really mean it? Are we being taught to feel the emotion of gratitude, or does it just become a habit without thought. Yes, we should say thank you, but we should also mean it.
It's when we put feeling into what we say that it becomes valuable and becomes gratitude. It's when we say it when we have to or without having to. When we are grateful, it increases our presence in the world. We are much more likely to get more of what we are grateful for than anything else. The universe (or god or the all powerful one) loves gratitude.
There are really so many things to be grateful for, things that we take for granted, things we don't ever think about. Being grateful and showing gratitude is not specific to one culture or religion. It is present in them all.

Gratitude in Motion
I begin my day, as soon as I wake up, with my gratitudes, whatever comes up. I say them out loud. If I say them quietly in my heart, there is a tendency for the mind to wander. I want my gratitudes to be intentional, with feeling and said in full consciousness. If ever I catch myself drifting I correct course.
I usually start with being grateful for a good nights sleep and for waking up. I say thank you for my health and breath. I say thank you that I have a roof over my head, food on my table, and clothes to wear, whatever comes to my mind. I think about my family and my friends and I am grateful for them.
It does not take long, and often when I drink my morning glass of water in my garden I look at all the abundance around me and I give thanks for that. During the day I may find myself being grateful for other things, great or small.
I have made it a habit to show my surroundings that I am grateful to them, people at work, people I meet by chance. When I receive good service somewhere, I don't hesitate to show how grateful I am for that with a kind word and a great thank you. Even the clerk in the post office can get a big thank you for good service. There are innumerable ways to show gratitude, and there are so many things to be grateful for.

Hi Birte, I Love this hub. I started teaching my children this concept a few months ago. Every night at the dinner table we go around the table and each one of us says something that we are grateful for that day. Since I am not the greatest cook in the world, sometimes my children are just grateful that they only have to eat that dinner once a day. Gratitude changes everything and it sure lightens our hearts. Thank you for a great hub.
Pete, isn't it strange that we have to be taught to be grateful
Whitkat, love that idea of doing it round the dinner table, and your ease in taking your kids remark on your cooking. See it's soo easy to be grateful

You are absolutely right. We should realize all of the things we should be greatful for and try to give back whenever we can. I have done some but not nearly enough.
