Where to get an Apple iPhone

Apple will be releasing the iPhone on June 29th at 6pm. I'm assuming that's 6pm locally wherever you happen to be. They'll be selling it at the Apple Stores (I almost wrote iStores lol!) and at AT&T stores. I'm sure they'll add online links too on June 29th. Right now there's no online retailers listed on the Apple iPhone homepage, but I would suspect Amazon is likely to have it. And naturally, on June 29th, it will be all over Ebay :)

Who wants an Apple iPhone?

As much as I'm a gadget-crazed fiend, I also tend to be a cheapskate so I'm usually one the last people on a bandwagon. It was years before I finally succumbed to the TiVo (now something I couldn't live without) and you don't even want to know how long I stubbornly continued to buy laserdiscs, long after it was clear they were going the way of the dinosaur.

However, two years ago I spent nearly $300 on a T-Mobile Sidekick and now that I've broken the "only get the free cellphone" barrier, I find myself actually considering things like payings hundreds of dollars for a brand new phone even though my current cellphone is perfectly fine.

I've been looking into getting a Palm Treo, but damn if those iPhones aren't sexy as hell. I've never been an Apple fanatic and find the mentality really annoying, but I do own an iPod and I must admit that overall Apple has a really excellent design aesthetic. Of course, so does Target :)

So, are you getting an Apple iPhone? Are you even tempted? I don't think I'm going to rush out and buy one right now, but I think I am going to have to consider the iPhone vs the Palm Treo.

I've put even more info together about the Apple iPhone Mobile phone at Squidoo!

Apple iPhone nuttiness on Ebay

Ebay has apparently shutdown most of the iPhone presales. One of them actually disappeared while I was looking at it and it already had several bids on it and was apparently the second or third time the seller had listed the auction only to have Ebay cancel it. Umm, dude! Get a clue! Ebay is not going to let you sell an iPhone before June 29th!

While I was browsing the listings for all the various accessories for the iPhone that are already listed, I came across this very curious auction. Someone was selling the email address: unlocked_iphone_forsale@yahoo.com

At one hour to go, it already had 6 bids and was priced at $15.50. By the time bidding ended, there were 43 bids and it sold for more than $400. Are people insane? Or have entrepreneurs truly snapped up every single free email address relating to iPhones? Somehow I doubt it.

Lesson learned: Never underestimate stupidity on Teh Internets! It would be cheaper to just register an iphone related domain and use that for an email address.

Absolutely. This may be the biggest product release since Windows 95. The iPhone is an incredible machine and it may very well change both computers and mobile phones completely. It runs OS X. It's a phone and it runs OS X. That by itself is just amazing.

Question, does Verizon support it? I thought only AT&T/Cingular were selling it.

Yup, it's stricktly AT&T/Cingular. Which is too bad. I'd never sign up with their network. Verizon would be so much better.

More than tempted. But I have two reservations:

1) No GPS or GPS-like functionality

2) AT&T's EDGE (2.5G) is much slower than Sprint's EVDO (3G).

AT&T has a two-year exclusivity agreement with Cingular. :(

I'll wait for the other manufacturers to improve their game and come up with an iPhone killer over the next 6 months. My contract with Sprint ends mid-November. :)

My biggest obstacle is the network. My T-Mobile contract expires in October and I was planning on switching to Verizon. I was very happy with them out in LA and T-Mobile is just terrible. Not sure AT&T is much better.
