Apple is known to posses a refreshing product cycle in which a major new product is released every year or an existing product is upgraded with newer features. This article briefly takes a look at the recently introduced Apple iPod Nano with 16GB inbuilt memory. It is to be noted that this is the fourth generation of the product and hence it is also known as Apple 4G.

Firstly a brief insight into the technical specifications of the product. It weighs just 36.8 grams and is comparatively lighter than the competitors like Creative Zen, Samsung’s YP-T10 and the Sony Walkman NWZ- A726. But the product fails at the screen size with just 2 inches while the others feature a minimum of 2.5 inches. Battery life is also on the lower side with just 24 hours of battery backup, while the models from Creative, Samsung and Sony feature 30, 30 and 36 hours of backup time respectively. This time is calculated when the unit is used only for audio playback. When video too is being played, the unit delivers just 4 hours on the battery pack.

Sony A726 can play videos for a period of 10 hours. Some of the video formats playable by the Nano are M4V, MP4 and MOV. WMV9, DIVX 4/5, XVID, H.264 are some of the video formats not playable by the Nano. Audio formats are more or less the same for all the four products with Nano featuring playback of Apple lossless along with the usual MP3, AAC. Support for open source codecs like OGG is still absent in the product. One of the notable features is the presence of the accelerometer. But the other usual gimmicks such as the Bluetooth, FM Radio, Voice Recorder, User Expandable Memory are all absent in the 4G Apple Nano.

One of the most heard complaints about the product was the over-width. This had many at times made it difficult to be held in the hands of the beholder. With this generation of the Nano, there is a marked difference in the width of the product; it is much thinner than its predecessors. One of the main factors for incorporating the thinner width maybe attributed to the fact that the previous landscape view was changed to the portrait view. This also made the users to realize video playback while holding the device sideways.

One of the features or the disadvantages of such products is that they are barely readable under direct sunlight. But the product’s screen is nicely and visibly rendered even under conditions of direct sunlight. The device is slightly pointed at the edges and is curved in the sides. Besides being lightweight also works to the advantage of the user. Users will not forget the touch wheel which was incorporated into the product. But in this Nano many reviewers have found it to be a bit tough to navigate about the various options of the player. Nothing much to be pinned down about the user interface too as it remains the same.
