Apple iTunes was launched in April 2003, it took about three years to cross 1 billion songs in February 2006, and today it has reached more than three billion songs. RIAA should be happy with this news, are they?

Apple iTunes crossed the 2 billion song mark about 6 months ago and today it has reached more than three billion songs. Maybe the hatred the RIAA have for Steve Jobs would have lessened with this Apple announcement. With the iPhone release in June, the songs will sell even more in the future.

According to the customer surveys by the NPD Group, Apple iTunes is the third biggest overall music retailer in the U.S., behind No. 1 Wal-Mart Stores Inc., and Best Buy. The ranking was based on unit songs sold (12 tracks equivalent to a CD album sold in stores).

Apple has sold more than 100 million iPods worldwide and iPhones are expected to sell more than 3 million by 2008, so iTunes will sell even more music downloads in the coming years.

Shares of Apple fell $3.88, or 2.7 percent, to $137.55 during afternoon trading Tuesday.
