Applesauce Brownie Recipe: Applesauce Caramel Brownie

If you love applesauce brownies, you'll really love the addition of the caramel frosting on top.

1 package brownie mix (with chocolate syrup pouch)

1 cup applesauce

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

2 eggs

1 cup chopped nuts

Caramel Frosting

Directions

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease bottom only of rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches.

Stir brownie mix, chocolate syrup, applesauce, oil and eggs in medium bowl about 50 strokes or until well blended. (Mixture may be lumpy.) Stir in nuts. Spread in pan.

Bake about 35 minutes or until toothpick inserted 2-inches from side of pan comes out clean or almost clean. Cool completely.

Make Caramel Frosting while brownies cool. Frost and decorate if desired. For 36 brownies, cut into 6 rows by 6 rows. Store covered.

Caramel Frosting

1/2 cup butter or margarine

1 cup packed brown sugar

1/4 cup milk

2 cups powdered sugar

Melt butter in 2-quart saucepan over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar. Heat to boiling, stirring constantly. Reduce heat to low. Boil and stir 2-minutes.

Stir in milk. Heat to boiling; remove from heat. Cool about 45 minutes or until lukewarm. Gradually stir in powdered sugar.

If frosting is too thin, place saucepan of frosting in bowl of cold water. Beat frosting until smooth and thick enough to spread. If frosting becomes too thick, stir in additional milk, 1 teaspoon at a time.

Substituting applesauce for part of the oil in any baked goods is a great way to reduce the fat content of the recipe.
