Here is a quick rundown of the holidays and special days that fall in the month of April.
- April Fool's Day
- Good Friday
- Easter
- Administrative Professional's Day
- Arbor Day
April Fools Day or All Fools Day is the first notable day we celebrate in April since it falls on the 1st day in April. April Fools Day is not a holiday however. This day is marked by all kinds of mischief, hoaxes, and playing practical jokes on friends, family and coworkers. It is supposed to all be in good fun. The aim of these jokes is to embarrass the gullible. Don't play a joke on someone who can't take it or you could be in for trouble.
Good Friday is the Friday on which the Christian Church keeps the anniversary of the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. It is the Friday before Easter which marks the anniversary of Christ's death and is sometimes called the Great or the Holy Friday.
Easter is the most important Christian holiday of the year. Christians believe that Jesus was resurrected from the dead three days after his crucifixion. Many Christians celebrate this resurrection on Easter Sunday which is also known as Resurrection Day or Resurrection Sunday. Easter falls at some point between late March and late April each year and is two days after Good Friday. In 2009 it is April 12th.
Many families will attend Sunday Mass or Easter services in the morning and then participate in a feast or party in the afternoon and maybe an Easter egg hunt for the children. Hot cross buns are a traditional treat as well as Ham
Easter is also seen as the season that life starts and things renew. Birds begin nesting, flowers come out of the ground, and children particiate in Easter egg hunts. Everyone dresses up in their finest and pastel colors are popular during this season. Easter bonnets have been famous since the 1920s and the Easter bunny makes his debut bringing children baskets of chocolates, bright colored eggs, and chicks. Parents help small children color hard boiled eggs and decorate the house with Easter themed decorations.
April is also when Spring really starts to take hold. Birds begin chirping wildly as they find their favorite spot to nest, grass turns green, buds appear on trees as they come out of their winter rest, and life comes tot he earth once again.
Administrative Professionals Day which was formerly known as Secretary's Day is an unofficial holiday observed on the Wednesday of the last full week of April to recognize the hard work of secretaries, administrative assistants, receptionists, and other administrative support professionals. It is usually celebrated by bosses who send their assistants bouquets of flowers as a way of thanking them for all of their hard work throughout the year.
Arbor Day is a holiday in which individuals and groups are encouraged to plant and care for trees. Seedlings are often given out for free at local nurserys and stores that sells plants to encourage everyone to plant a tree and save the planet from global warming.
