Aquarium- Bring home the vista of exotic marine life!

What is more pleasing to the eye than a school of pretty gold fishes gently wading through streams of water? Maintaining an aquarium is a fascinating hobby that a lot of people are taking to recently. Nothing sounds better than having the beautiful and exotic marine life filled up in a tank right in your drawing room. Right? But just jumping it into the venture without any knowledge about fish keeping will only prove to be a blunder. Learning the basics of aquarium maintenance is extremely important prior to setting up one at your home. First of all realize that an aquarium can accommodate only restricted amount of water compared to the natural living environment of a fish. Closer the aquarium is to the natural habitat of the fish that is kept in the aquarium; longer are the chances of their survival.

Care should also be observed while purchasing the tank. Choose filters and equipment according to your preferences. If you are adding new fish to an aquarium that already has fish in it, it is advised to quarantine the new fish before adding them into the tanks or else you might end up losing all your fishes. Quarantining new fish will help to maintain a healthy aquarium by preventing the occurrence of any disease that is likely to spread from the new fish added into the tank. If you quarantine new fish for at least 2 weeks you will be able to see if they develop any diseases and treat them accordingly. Also research on what kind of fishes go together. There are semi-aggressive, aggressive, and community fish. Angel fish should never be mixed with tiger barbs.

Changing the aquarium water is of extreme importance. On an average, changing 25% of the water weekly is regarded as normal. Always be cautious not to set up the tank and purchase the fish the same day. Remember that you are relocating the fish from its original natural habitat and fishes are used to living amidst many bacteria, fungi and other micro-organisms, not to mention the plant life and other water creatures. After setting up the tank, wait for a few days before adding fish into it so that the chemicals get the time to balance and bacteria grows in it. Also see to it that only a few are added at a time or else it can throw off the balance in the tank and kill the fish.

For all lovers of aquarium, whether novices or experts proper understanding of the basics of aquarium keeping can go a long way in creating an aquarium of their dreams. Treat your finned friends just as you care for your other pets!
