Arctic Ice, Part Two
47where did all the cold ice go - long time passing?
Well, some 7 weeks or so ago I wrote about the Arctic Ice Mass and how it seems to be melting at an unprecedented rate. Never in recorded history, which arguably is not all that long a time, has the ice at the North Pole been so thin, so small and so fragile.
Now comes the news that by September the ice in the Arctic region may disappear completely.
Granted, the melt is not expected to be permanent - the ice will return, but for the entire ice mass to simply disappear, if indeed this is what will occur, seems to me to be just another early warning sign.
So, I am certain that there are those who pooh-pooh the entire idea, and if it does not occur, we will all go about our merry lives and forget the matter until the next call to action.
However, if the entire Artic Ice Mass does indeed melt away, I have to ask the naysayer crowd - what else needs to happen before you finally get the picture?
OK, I'll simply say let's wait and see - if the ice does completely disappear, I'll be stunned and saddened. If it melts to nothingness I hope that even the most skeptical amongst us will sit up and take notice, and not try to pass it off as something that is "just a natural cycle of the earth."

Unfortunately, it is an early earning sign for most of the people, since so many of "us" have been hiding our heads in the sand (and ice) for so long. I know for you this is no early warning, since you have been aware of these things for a very long time.
But not everyone has allowed him or her self to think about the problems we are creating and wallowing in. Most people will sit in their easy chairs as the flood waters rise, jutting their heads up higher to keep their eyes on " 'Merican Idle" or whatever other show is out there to distract us from the reality all around us.
It's only when the power goes out that most of us begin to wonder - "What's going on here???? When did this happen?????"
It has never failed to amaze me just how much people will endure before they get active.
We are sleepwalking and will not awaken until we step off a cliff and hit the ground at the bottom.
We are indoctrinated. End of story.
Hi Chef Jeff, if it melts to nothingness, the small and low islands will disappear. Actually, they're already starting to disappear.
BeatsMe, I am a teacher and when I lived in Galena, Illinois, I had some students from the Marshall Islands way out there in the Pacific. Anyway, I wondered, what brings tropical island people to the Midwest?
Well, their islands - all 13 or so of them that we didn't blow up with atomic bombs in the 1950's, are being covered with sea water. The islands are not eroding away - the sea has actually risen so that about 1/3 to 1/2 of the former land of their islands is now under water!
As the sea levels rise even more, and indeed they are rising year by year, within a decade the Marshal Islands will cease to exist. All 60,000 of the residents who were born there in the past 20 years will be forced to find another home. I believe that some 20,000 already have, living in Hawaii, Oregon, Arkansas and Iowa.

Jeff, just another EARLY warning sign? Would that it were so. Early is long gone for warnings unheeded. It's late and getting later, faster every day. I'm beginning to feel a certain sense of futility. It occurs to me more frequently as each day passes that, maybe, it might be better if most of the human race just got it over with and went away.
