We've gotten so used to cellular phones that we just can't imagine life without them. Some of us depend on them so much that it borders on addiction. But, are cell phones safe to use? There have been studies carried out in the past that seemed to suggest that cell phones can cause brain tumors. Well, do they? Also, studies have found that cell phone users are at an increased risk of getting involved in car crashes while chatting on the phone and driving. Let us examine some of these concerns and whether you should really be worrying about any potential health risks or can take any precautions to safeguard your health.

The concern about cell phones arises from the usage of RF or radiofrequency energy. Studies in mice have shown an acceleration in cancer development, however the studies were not conclusive. Does that mean that there is nothing to worry about. Well, not quite. It is acknowledged by most experts that cell phone usage can be dangerous, but they don't know how dangerous they can be. So, the concern is valid. No definitive evidence doesn't mean - there is absolutely nothing to worry about. In the future, they might well come up with another study stating that cell phones pose a significant enough risk.

Play it Safe - Don't Take Any Chances!!!

Because you never know and studies can throw up conflicting findings, it is therefore prudent to play it safe. I do the following to minimize any risk to myself.

  • If the call I am making is going to be a long one, I try to make it using my normal phone as opposed to my cell phone - thereby minimizing any prolonged exposure to radiation.
  • I try to use the speaker phone feature on my cell phone (when possible) to maintain the maximum distance between the cell phone and my head to minimize any potential harmful effects.

I encourage people I know to follow the above as well. You never know with these studies. Although, at the moment, they say cell phone usage is perfectly safe, they might come up with another study in the future stating the exact opposite. Better to be safe than be sorry!!!

While there have been conflicting studies on cell phone radiation dangers and the issue has been much debated, there is one way cell phones can cause definite harm. If you are one of those people who are in the habit of talking on the cell phone while driving, then please do refrain from doing so. It could cost you your life. I've known of people personally who've died as a result of this totally avoidable situation. If you do need to talk, please do stop your car and talk.

You might not think that cell phones could distract you while driving, but they surely do. Numerous studies have proven this fact. So, stay safe and don't talk on your cell phone while driving. If you have to, pull off the road and stop and talk. Better to be safe - than be sorry!!!
