Are Hinduism and Christianity any Different?
62The Question.
This question haunts me. I am a practicing Hindu while my schooling was in Catholic Schools. I am reasonably familiar with both religions. And I am puzzled and baffled.
The Rituals.
Let us examine the basic rituals:
We have three entities governing us. (Trimurti: Brahma (Creators), Vishnu (Protector) and Shiva (Destroyer), for Hindus, and The Father, Son and the Holy Ghost for Christians.). As I understand, the concept is also similar. Please correct me if I am wrong.
We light Lamps at the time of prayers.
We kneel or prostrate as a sign of surrender.
We take holy water as a source of blessing and purification.
We have communions.
We have same concerns for which we pray.
The actual motions, language and intonations are different. Purpose and effect are same.
The Matsyavatara.
This is a story of the very first reincarnation of
Lord Sri Maha Vishnu the Protector.
In ancient India the southern part was called
Dravida. The King of Dravida was Satyavrata (Meaning, A person who vowed by
Truth)
He had gone to a river for bath one day. While
washing his hands, a small fish swam into his hands and implored him to protect
his life as he was in danger of being eaten by a larger fish. Taking pity on
it, the King put him in a “Kamandala”, a jar. The fish the increased in size
till it out grew the jar. It was then transferred to a pond, a, lake, a river
and an ocean, progressively, as it grew. As the King gave his word for
protecting the fish, he could not go back on it. His desperation grew and he
prayed to Lord Sri Maha Vishnu to help him. There was a revelation and it was
then Satyavrata come to know the fish was a reincarnation of the God himself!
All the travails the king was put through were to condition him for the
enormous task that was ahead.
He was then informed that there would be a “Pralaya”,
a deluge of infinite proportion, which could destroy the life in existence. The
task for him was to build a boat and accommodate all species of animals,
Medicinal Herbs, for preservation of fauna and flora, and seven sages so that the
knowledge of past could be carried on. Vasuki the serpent of the god was also
put on board.
Then the deluge came. The boat was floundering. Sri Maha
Vishnu appeared as the fish, Vasuki was used as a rope to tie the boat. The
other end was taken by God, and the boat was towed to safety. The living
survived.
Sounds familiar? Let me refresh your memory.
Noah,s Ark.
The book of genesis has this to say. Some tine after
creation, the God gazed at earth and was angered by all the evil which had
encompassed it. However there was a good being, who tried to reform but was not
successful. In anger God ordered a great flood to destroy the earth, except for
the good.
The god then asked Noah to build an ark large enough
to have space for Noah and his family, and, two of all species of animals and
seven of all edible living beings.
Obeying God, Noah spent many years building the ark.
Once that was finished, he gathered all that was to be protected in it. God then
sent pouring rain for forty days. The water rose higher and higher. Rivers
flooded, Oceans tided in. The whole of earth was flooded. Noah, his family and
the protected were safely in the ark which floated on the water and were saved.
After floating for seven months the ark landed on dry land near Mount Arafat.
Here again the substance is same the modality different.
We are ONE!
One striking point is, if God made us and governs us, then how can one be evil? When God created us, he gave us a brain and a set of rules to follow, in order to be useful to the society. I believe that, we forgot the rules and evil used our minds.
There should be thousands of other such similarities which I do not know. I will try to find them. For peace and brotherhood we need to find common ground.

Very true kiran. I am trying to trace these common roots. Thank You!
We're all connected... hehehe nice topic (: can I be my fan. I'm newbie hehehe and needs to know the ropes of things in hubpages...
I know that all religions have a common thread and share variations of the same stories. What makes the Christian story stand out is that The Spirit of God lived inside of Yashua(Jesus) and Yashua (Jesus) life was a sacrifice which reconnected Us back to God. Also, the Spirit of God is able to live inside of Us as a result.
Tonei, Thank you very much for the insight.
Every religion leads to the same path, it is just human's ego that makes religions different and started war in the name of god.
I liked this hub, and your searching out loud is wonderful....... I don't think you really want answers do you..... you will work this out yourself..... I love the way your mind is working........ keep hubbing, your hubs are def. worth a read...... did I read somewhere you are not well....... how are you now????????
@metaphysician, Very true, ego is the enemy of peace. Thank you! @Brenda, Thank you very much for the appreciation. As for me I am a Juvenile Diabetic and have a job in the construction industry. I have to travel a lot and spend at least 9 months an year away from my home. I have recovered from an urinary tract infection, and am mobile now. Thank you for the concern. It is very touching.
Hi there
You are correct as far as the similarities are, but, people make a mistake when they think about Christians and Christianity. The Catholic Church is not Christian, it only mimics Christianity. I have studied religions for close to 30yrs and can give you where all the similarities started, and you will notice the obvious. This hub is too small for the info. I will do a hub just on this.
Go well
Thank you HOOWANTSTONO! I await the Hub!
all relgions has one teacheing .............
Agree with you fatheh, you are right. Thank you.
Bala, greetings and thank you for your message. May you have peace, joy and improving health. You asked me to comment on this hub about Hinduism and Christianity. You have the advantage of me since I know little of Hinduism. I only know that my old neighbours were Hindu and I could not have wishes for nicer, quieter, more peaceful, kind or polite neighbours. They called me in on one of your special days to share their food and hospitality with me. A true sign of friendship. Ritual, remember, is less important and only peripheral to BELIEF and how we put that belief into practice daily in the way we behave toward others. I understand what you say about 1)The similaraties of certain rituals 2)The parallel accounts in our sacred writings of certain events which seem to confirm a common link of human origins somewhere back in the mists of (almost) pre-history!We cannot hope to discover the reason for these but only accept that they point to the same Divine Origin. I have to say however, that it is obvious that we look at these matters from completely different perspectives. RITUALS for the Christian are only the outward, visible signs of deeper, life-changing possibilities. Two examples: you refer to 'three enitities governing us' but Christianity teaches us that there exists only ONE entity and the three 'persons' you mention are manifestations of only ONE reality... one Creator.. one source of creation. COMMUNION to the Christian, if it be true, is the most incredible event we can experience in this life, nothing more astounding in fact. Two BIG differences. Also Purpose and Effect, as you refer to them are seen in VERY different ways. Does all of this matter Bala? Well, I guess we will all have to wait and see. You and me can only AFFIRM each other's dignity and worth. To recognise in each other the will and sincerity to do good and love others in peace and harmony with all. Let's leave the rest to God or Gods!
Thank you very much for the wishes and for the enlightening perspective.

Why only Hinduism and Christianity, almost all religions have the same basic teachings, with some different variations as regards putting it into practice..
