Are The Braces Worth It?

I'm Having To Change My Lifestyle

I have just recently gotten braces and I am on the 3rd day of pain. I can barely eat anything and have almost completely lost the ability to play the trumpet. I can already see my teeth changing and I hope that the braces will work out in the future, but at the time being, I'm physically exhausted and in mental distress. This hub is to ask and hopefully answer the question: Are the braces worth it?

What I CAN'T Do

I can no longer eat any of the things that are in my usual diet. I just recently had to eat guacamole with potato chip instead of a tostitos. This is because I can no longer eat anything that end with the sound "eeto". Such as Cheetos, Doritos, and Tostitos. That has basically eliminated majority of my snacks.

Meals are also a challenge due to the fact that I can't really "chew" anything. I am becoming more and more aware of the hazards of not completely chewing my food (I choked on several chips with the guacamole). Meat can barely be eaten because I cannot tear my food with my front teeth nor can I cut it into smaller pieces because the chewing problem comes up again. I know that I will eventually become accustomed to the braces, but my mind can't really wrap itself around the fact that everything will be fine.

The Saddest Note

As I told you before, I've lost my ability to play the trumpet and have forfeited the 2nd chair position to another trumpeter. My playing is slowly coming back but I can tell that it's going to be awhile before I get back to normal. But until that happens, I'm cursed with a sound that is similar to that of a strangled poodle and an angry alligator combined. The sound even hurts my own ears and I can't evenĀ begin to imagine how it sounds to others.

Now To Answer The Original Question...

I believe (or I hope) that the braces will pay off in the long run. I'll have a bright shining smile with straight teeth that I will be glad to show off. I'm sure I'll be writing another hub to tell you about how the braces aren't so bad after you've had them for a while. So I'll just wait and see what happens next. Please leave comments if you have orĀ  have had braces. Let me know if you're experience got better.

RjSkains, it sounds terrible. I have never had braces. How old are you? Did you choose to do this yourself? Or did your parents make the decision?

Hi Aya Katz, I want to thank you for the insightful hubs as well as the comment you posted to my Are The Braces Worth It? hub. The decision of me getting braces was a joint decision between my parents and I. They weren't going to force me to get the braces if I didn't want them. I just knew that I wanted straight teeth because I was sure that they would pay off in the long run. I guess the the sfter effects caught me off guard. But I'm positive that things will get better, so there's no need to worry.

As it turns out... I'm back to my normal self and can eat just about everything I used to now. My trumpet playing is slowly improving and I plan to reclaim my chair in the next chair test.

dlw207,

I had all those things done too. You're going to feel pain for the first few days, but you'll get used to it quite quickly. I wish you the best of luck.
