The Healing Power of Silence

Where the global population is experiencing intense stress around finances, home life, relationships and health, we're all surely feeling it in our own individual lives as well.

Sometimes we feel like we're going backwards, getting distracted or going in circles at the crazy times in our lives. Getting off course like that happens more than we'd like, especially in this high-stress day and age. We weren't really taught how to handle the levels of stress that society is under.

Instead, we were taught to ignore our inner voice and deny our true feelings. That's a lot like turning off the GPS device in the middle of New York City. No more inner voice = No more maps! No more direction! a.k.a. LOST.

And that's a scary place to be.

So, we are left walking around in the proverbial pitch dark, taking steps out of fear instead of out of clarity. We trudge around hoping we end up in a better situation, but not really feeling very peaceful about it.

I think we as humans spend a lot of our lives wandering around in the dark without a healthy sense of direction. We've disconnected from our true selves and instead plugged in to the world around us.

Every once in a while, life deals us a disaster. WHAM. And there we are face to face with ourselves where it is dark and quiet, with no noise to drown out our inner voice once again.

Did you ever think about how tough times like sickness land us in bed, losing loved ones makes for an eerily quiet house, and job loss suddenly makes us less busy and distracted? Isn't it odd that the common product of most tough times is dead silence? It's like we're being pushed back into our selves to listen to the inner voice that was placed inside us to guide us.

So what's happening in your life? Where is there a notable silence?

Maybe it's because there's a lot of power in silence. There is truth there. Undeniable truth. Having to sit in the quiet after all of the fallout of a tough event is no easy task. It can be very painful, but at the same time transformative. I believe it takes amazing toughness and courage to endure that kind of quiet. The answers that come out of the silence lead us on to live our lives better. It's no mistake that when life's tough times get our attention that much-needed direction and clarity returns to the surface to steer us forward.

I love that about the quiet. When panic attacks hit me so hard, I have to take more Xanax and lay in bed, because of all the fear, it is through quiet and very few interactions, with journaling, that helps me get back a bit of desensitized state, though I am always sensitive. Know what I mean?

Anyway, the quiet comment rang true within and thank you.

Thanks, Jayme. There are some great ways to prevent or lessen panic attacks that can be learned through coaching. Some of it has to do with training the mind to recognize when an attack is coming and to keep power by talking it down so to speak. It also has to do of course with being in an overloaded state, which can sneak up before we know it. So getting some coping tools prepared in advance really seems to help. Also acknowledging the feelings and allowing them to be real without letting the fear take over and get out of control. The best fact I enjoyed learning is that panic attacks never cause physical harm, even though the attack can feel life-threatening. Please send me a note if you'd ever be interested in an empowerment session. I can see you have the drive to get on top of this challenge for good and I know you will! www.jennaforrest.com
