What is diabetes? It is the way our bodies use digested food for growth and energy. When we eat, a majority of the food is broken down into the form of sugar in the blood called glucose. The body needs Glucose for fuel.

Glucose passes into the bloodstream after our food is digested. It is used by cells for growth and energy. Insulin needs to be present to enable glucose to absorb into the cells thru the blood. The pancreas produces the right amount of the hormone, insulin,.

The pancreas either produces little or no insulin, and the cells do not respond to the insulin that is produced in people with diabetes. The glucose has built up in the blood, and overflows into the urine. The body passes it out thru the urine. The body has lost its main source of fuel.

There are more than one million people per year who are newly diagnosed with diabetes. You can control your diabetes by controlling the kinds of food you eat. Exercise is another good way to help control your diabetes.

If you can't control your diabetes with exercise and diet, you may have to take an oral glucose medication such as Glipside, Metformin, or Starlix.

Taking your blood sugar levels is a good way to control your diabetes. Good blood sugar levels are 70-110. You should keep a log every day of your blood sugar levels.

Diabetes can be a devastating disease but if your diabetes is controlled, you can have a healthy life with diabetes.
