Are You Skinny Enough To Fit Through A Lifesaver?

Supermodels are dying. Not from falling off runway. Not for falling through cracks in the cement but for the mental and physical hardships that are the requirements of the supermodel.
Luisel Ramos, 20, died of a heart attack due to anorexia.
Her little sister Eliana, also a model, 18, died six months after her sister in February of this year from anorexia.
December 2008, just three months before the Ramos sisters deaths, Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died of anorexia at the age of 21.
Fashion heads from Madrid and Milan have set a minimum body mass for models who are in their shows. Other fashion heads in London and Paris have refused to follow the same guidelines, insisting off the record that their models come in at a size 0. Big designer's have continued to produce clothes at a size 0 and smaller insisting that tall skinnier models can show off their clothes better than fuller size models.
Some Of The Diets These Models Go On
The Celery Diet. This diet consists of eating three stocks of celery and ten glasses of water. You can use catsup, mustard or soy sauce. Nothing white (like mayo or ranch dressing).
The Tea diet. Ten to twelve glasses of tea a day. No sugar, no creamer. Just water. And I guess if your hungry enough you can eat the tea bag.
The Tape worm diet. you swallow pills that contain a tape worm. The tape worm then eats all the food that you try to digest.
The Inflatable Bag Diet. You swallow a bag that has a tube attacted to it. The tube comes through your nose. You fill the bag with water as it sits your somach. This is supposed to fill your stomach so you feel more full.
The Purple diet. You only eat foods that are purple. Beets, grapes, plums. Mariah Carey is said to have been on this diet.
The Cigarette Diet. Whenever you get hungry just smoke a cagarette. The caffine in the cigarette is supposed to keep you from getting hungry.
These ideas about the body don't just center around women. Men are also falling into morbid ideas of the ideal weight you should be to become a supermodel. They have been subjected to the same modeling agents telling them to lose more and more weight to fit into designer's unreal perception of beauty.
As children you are taught to eat everything on your plate because there are people in Africa that are starving. You're taught to eat your vegetables so you can grow big and strong like Popeye. You are taught that you can't eat junk food before dinner or you'll ruin your appetite. You're told to feed a fever, starve a cold. An apple a day keeps the doctor away. All of these sayings and old wives tales that we hear as we grow up are mostly positive views about food.
Perception and ideals about food in this day and age can be so hyporcritical and warped that it's understandable how teens and adults are getting mixed signals.
McDonald's and just about every fast food restaurants have menu's that can be super sized. But yet they have a lower calorie menu right next to the hamburger with four patties and six slices of cheese. As a teenager, making a healthy decision at the drive thru can be somewhat of a conflicted decision.
Even when you think your eating healthy at these fast food restaurants, the calorie and fat intake is somewhat unbelievable. For example:
Wendy's Mandarian Chicken Salad: 520 calories/25 grams of fat
Chili's Southwestern Cobb Salad: 970 calories
Dairy Queens Grilled Chicken Salad: 680 calories/48 grams of fat
Ruby Tuesday Grilled Salmon Salad: 590 calories/ 35 grams of fat
Arby's Santa Fe Salad: 884 calories/55 grams of fat
A Big Mac has 580 calories. A Big Mac, medium fries and drink total 1250 calories.
These Images Of Beauty Are Frightening
Celebrity images and hero worshipping have truly made life for some people suffering from eating disorders agonizing. They can never seem to accomplish the perceived beauty that magazines and television have basically ordered them become.
And because of that, we will continue to see images of people starving themselves in countries like the U.S., where we have enough food to feed the whole world at any given time. People will continue to die because of their own food demons. Demons that our society have created.
The title of my hub has humorous tinge to it but there is nothing funny about this subject. It is unbelievable to me how our society chooses to ignore these warped concepts of beauty and self image that our own society has created.
We want our children to grow up healthy but we have one of the biggest fast food industries in the world and very few regulations enforcing nutrition.
Our schools at all grade levels have minimal physical education requirements. Running around a track for ten minutes doesn't seem suffice.
Celebrity worshipping seems to be getting worse. Celebrities themselves are under peer pressure to compete against each other in the business of beauty and thinness.
I understand that the illness of anorexia is a lot more about a mental illness than it is completely about food. I just don't think that our society is much help. I feel sad for all of those who have died and lived a tormented life all because of the effects of our misguided and misinformed media.
In conclusion, I have not ignored the responsibility of the parent. I feel that if you teach your children about food, health and nutrition at an early age, the less likely they will be to have fears about such things.
The knowledge is in the awareness of such subjects that plague our world.

Think there should be a law against these people for insisting on size 0 and below, in my opinion it is legal murder for these poor people, who look absolutely terrible.
A heart wrenching hub....I worked with a woman back in the 90s who suffered from bulimia. She was a singer/songwriter and was trying for a carreer in the music biz. She worked with other women on treating eating disorders. One 22 year old woman had no esophagus left and died of cancer.
My friend died a few years back of cancer. She was in her early 40s. Thanks for writing this....it is very important to let people know.
Thanks for telling the truth about dieting and super models. I have four daughters and will be insisting they read your hub. It has not been a problem for my girls at this point in their lives, however, I want them to be informed and armed with the truth.
Weird how so many are obessed with food one way of another. I think some of those super skinny model shots have been doctored because I remember seeing them before and they were doctored. Tape worms - ugh
That's just scary! Besides, everyone knows soft curvy women are more beautiful. Being fit and healthy is what counts.
I agree with RVDaniels, women are supposed to be soft and warm and all that niceness. These supermodels look hard, cold and with sharp edges. Its gross if you ask me. Who would honestly find these models attractive?
I also did a post about super skinny models literally dying from starvation some time back and how after that, these super skinny models had been banned from walking the ramp (Thank goodness!) They have to have a certain BMI in order to be on the ramp. So yes i do think that perceptions are changing about what constitutes beautry, even in the fashion world.
Excellent information, an eye openeer to all those teenagers and others trying to ape the super models. Honestly one can only pity the environment ,high society and the media to a certain extent which drives them to those levels...
Reminds me of Ethiopia during famine. Disgusting!
Those skinny women are pitiful. That is in no way attractive. Great Hub!
Great hub; very painful to look at those skinny images, with their ribs sticking out. I cry (and gag) at the sight of Calista Flockhart, and the twins from Full House with their concave body parts that should be curved and healthy-looking. They are in no way role models! Queen Latifa is definitely a better role model!
i've been away from a computer foe awhile, but I thank you all so much for the comments and taking the time out to read about my thoughts. I'm glad that the common theory is that a healthy body image isn;t the ones that i've shown above. except for the "bigger" body images I've shown.as an example of "healthy body images".. Thank you all for your comments and interest.
rburow-thank you so much for reading my hub. Thanks so much for your comment and wanting your daughters to read my hub. You are a great father-wanting your daughters to understand the severity of this social conflict. Thank you again for reading.
Great article, christine. I'm glad I'm your fan!
I definitely don't get it. Those women do not look good actually they look grotesque. I though models were supposed to also be possitive influence for the people that look at them.
I sorta miss the dove commercials where they were showing "real" women and complimenting a picture of health. I always thought that the image of ... Aphrodite looked more soft and appealing and beautiful than soo big you can't fit through a door or so small I can't even look. lol
I think this is an excellent hub. thumbs up!
dohn121-thank you for being a fan. I appreciate it.
sandra-I agree. I think all of the visions of these skinny, skinny women only feed an already insecure society. I don't think it helps young women in the least.
EXCELLENT HUB.The part where the diet of these models is enought to scare away anyone wanting to be a model. HowIwish my students could see this. We have numerous cases of girls collapsing in college because they think its fashionable to starve themselves.
Wow this is so off the wall! What a great read!
absolutely agree with you christina, i look at the models and even hollywood starlets and think my god how can they think thats ok? im 5'1 and weigh 110, some of them weigh the same as i do. that is just ridiculous and you are right people think they look hot and its acceptable. as a society we do condone this behavior and are even partly responsible for it.
I have never thought of these skinny models as attractive and have never wanted to be intimate with them from fear of sharp objects. Its amazing that designers dont want the public to see REAL women in their clothes. Maybe its because their clothes look horrible in anything but toy sizes.
My daughter got into modeling because she has always been naturally thin - in fact she has tried to gain weight! Before signing with her current agency in New York she met with another one who thought she should lose an inch in her hips - I didn't even know she had hips! She is a size 2 and wasn't interested in going lower, especially when she grew up with people wondering if she was anorexic. If that's what it takes to be a top model - no thank you! She is doing just fine. In fact she has gone to some castings where the designers clothes are too big for her (they start at a size 4) Maybe things are changing or its just the top models that get the designers with the teeny clothes.

Thank for and excellent article talking about this society and the images women are supposed to live up to.
