So you're a lesbian moving to Dallas! I am 39 and I have lived in or around Dallas all of my life. I can't really compare living as a lesbian in Dallas to other cities, but I can tell you how things are here!

In general, the DFW area is pretty much gay-friendly! We have conseravtive areas, liberal areas, who-cares areas, but everyone gets along pretty well most of the time. We have very affluent areas to live in, really horrid ones, and plenty of everything in between. The cost of living is lower than average while incomes are higher than average! The weather is hot and humid through summer, but the winters are mild!

Whatcha do, Baby? The most affluent areas to live in Dallas are the Park Cities (Highland Park, University Park) and the Uptown area just north of downtown. Lots of new nice, pricey condos and apartments have recently been built Uptown. The Park Cities mostly consists of older, but very nice residential neighborhoods in the SMU college area. If you're a well-to-do city girl who loves to live right in the middle of the action close to shopping, restaurants, night-life, etc. Uptown is your place!

I want a yard! If you're like most folks, you would prefer to buy or rent a house in the suburbs, or get an apartment in a less bustling area! Peace and quiet! The north side suburbs are better ones. Cities west and east start to get a little questionable in some areas and the south side should be avoided. I suggest looking for a home in Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Addison, far north Dallas, Plano, Frisco, Richardson and the north end of Garland. To the northwest, check out the Las Colinas area of Irving.

But I'm broke! Alright, you're coming to Dallas to start over! You need somewhere to live that you can afford. There are still some all-bills-paid apartments in Oak Lawn, which is the "gay area" near Uptown. These older apartments are quickly being demolished to make way for the new condos, but there are still some left. There are also affordable places to live in Balch Springs, Mesquite, the south end of Garland and the south part of Irving. Crime is generally not a big issue in these areas. I am trying to be helpful, so I'm not going to suggest an area that I know is very unsafe!

At all income levels, if you search Craigslist, you will find TONS of folks needing roommates all over the Dallas area!

I need a job! No problem in Dallas! Jobs are available in great abundance in the professional, technical, medical and service industries. Again I will refer you to Craigslist. I have had much more success using Craigslist to find and get better jobs than I've ever had with Monster or Careerbuilder!

Hope you're not looking for big-time women's bar scene! Most of Dallas' gay scene is on one street in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas. There is one lesbian bar there and another a couple of blocks away. That's it! As far as I know it is. I don't get out much anymore myself. Throughout Uptown on McKinney Ave. there are plenty of restaurants and bars. Addison is pretty much a party town also! Just check the links for more info on cities, areas, bars, etc. I have mentioned here.

What to eat? Dallas has any type of food you can possibly want! Of course, we have an over abundance of Tex-Mex, but pretty much everything else is available as well!
