Are curvy women really back in fashion?

After years of on-and-off dieting to try to keep to fashion standards, it looks like finally I can be happy with my rounded body. Finally I do not need to make excuses and I can eat my cheese without feeling guilty afterwards.

Much to my happiness, I see that the past few years have seen a change in fashion models. At last the Skinny model is being seen as hazardous and unhealthy. And rounder curvy types are making a come back all over the place.

But who is considered a curvy woman? In the fashion world someone who wears a size 14 or higher is considered curvy. The average size for a woman nowdays, is a size 12 to 14. That is, a bust of 90 to 95 cm, 75cm waist and 100cm. hips.

Thankfully, it seems that lately there is a tendency to try to convince us that curvy women are back in fashion. We see magazine cover pages with photos of Catherine Zeta Jones, Salma Hayek or Jennifer Lopez proudly showing their generous curves. Curvy women such as Shakira, Beyoncé and Diam's, are becoming more and more the new fashion icons. More than 5,000 people who voted for the top 100 best celebrity bodies choose the more curvaceous girls at the top of the list. Jennifer Lopez, famed for her ample bottom, came top Maybe, finally we are accepting that men find curvy women more attractive.

More and more women are showing proudly their figures rather than starving themselves to fit in a size 8 or 6. Big boobs and ample hips are no longer a shame. Latin women however, have always been aware of this. And if nature did not give us enough we could always find multiple solutions such as the famous Wonderbra, padded panties or for the more afluent: fat injections or even implants!

To top it off, last week the BBC published research, by scientists at the Universities of Pittsburgh and California, suggesting that curvy women are cleverer. So on top of being sexy we can say that we are more intelligent than the skinny girls. Fantastic!

The American researchers used data from a study of 16,000 women, collecting details of their body measurements and their scores in cognitive tests, they found that those women with a greater difference between the waist and hips, scored significantly higher on the intelligence tests, and so did their children. This suggests that women with an hourglass figure are brighter and have cleverer children, too. This could be explain as a result of higher levels of omega3 fatty acids on the hips. In this area, the fat is likely to be full of Omega-3, which could improve the woman's own mental abilities as well as those of her child during pregnancy as the omega3 fatty acids are essential for the growth of the brain during pregnancy.

Previously, a number of scientific studies showed that men are "hard-wired" to find women with a greater waist-hip differential the most attractive. No one has yet been able to explain this, although theories include enhanced fertility, better childbearing abilities and longer life expectancy.

So, as it comes maybe this Christmas we will stop worrying about those extra chocolates finding their permanent home in our hips. Lets thank Jennifer Lopez almost as famous for her latino curves as her starring roles for making the fuller bottom a must have fashion accessory! After all who doesn't want a clever and sexy girl by their side?

I loved your pictures. Frankly, I have always been turned off by the Twiggy (circa 1960s) typed and have always preferred the curvey types. I always found those types to be more interesting to be with and now I know this was not just coincidence. Thanks to your Hub I now know that brains and curves go together. Thanks for the great hub.

Princessa, nice hub. I have to agree with Chuck, the anorexic look never did a thing for me, either.  And it is interesting to learn that the women I was always interested in have higher intellects. I know they always looked better. Thanks.

Well of course I had to give some input here. Stick figure girls will hopefully go the way of the dinosaur. Give me a girl with some curves and something to hold onto.

I was very thin for a number of years, and I found that the men I attracted were just stupid, stupid, stupid! Now I'm older, and curvier, and more men are attracted to my mind, not just my size 8 butt. I had thought I wanted to lose at least back to a size 10, but I'm thinking now I'll just tone up my size 12 and be happy with my nice curves.

Of course, I never did have a flat chest, so that helped a lot, even when I was skinny.

Thanks for making me feel better about myself!

Hi Moneyguy, thanks for supporting the "curvy ladies", I always liked 50s glamour, curvy sensual women. Hate the 80s fashion and the 90s anorexic bodies. Hope that curvy girls REALLY make a come back into fashionable land. After all... woman have curves it is unnatural to try to get rid of them!

Good for you djtphn1, join the club! Skinny is for little girls, not for real women... ;-)

Skinny women or girls are like plastic dolls !!

So, sexy-curvy pls. email me !............Ha...............ha....ha!!!

While I think it's great that women are being encouraged to embrace their curvy figures, I don't think it's fair to say "real women are curvy" and skinny is for little girls. It depends on your natural body type. Some women are really skinny despite having a healthy appetite. And some women's bone structures don't give them much in the way of curvy hips and other parts. Just as it's unhealthy for people to starve themselves to be skinny, we don't want naturally skinny people to resort to unhealthy eating habits and "chicken pills" (I kid you not, in some places skinny women take pills meant to plumpen chickens so they can get curves). No body type is better than the other. We should all just work with our natural body types; that's the healthiest option. If you work against it, you generally end up looking bad. Skinny women who eat to get big just end up fat and sloppy and unhealthy, while curvy women who starve themselves look sick and unhealthy. Why the constant need for people to praise one body type at the expense of those who don't fit that image? And I mean that for both the "thin is in" and "Curvy is in" mentalities.

Its a double edged sword really, and im constantly battleing my greek bum, if your fuller it can somewhat be very attractive esp in swimwear and some dresses, however and this is my opinion only as a 30 year old woman, I hate that extra weight I get in jeans it looks bad, slender girls (not as skinny as posh) look great in jeans no denial, JLo may look great in video clips, air brushed and clothed by a stylist but stick her in a pair of lees and lets see how hot she looks from behind, in conclusion it all depends on the outfit really and its great that all women are different if we were all curvy or all skinny there would be no choices for men and vice versa if all men were slender and athletic yets some are bulky bodybuilers, im not going to comment what is better it all comes down to personal choice, but yes fashion does play a big role in brainwashing the majority of us. Great article.

Dee and christalkalot: Thanks for your comments and for giving as a different point of view on the subject.

It is true, one body shape should not be regarded as better than the other, but it should not be looked down neither. That is why it is so great that curvy bodies are comming back into fashion as a desirable shape after they have been "looked down" for so long in the fashion industry.

Great hub. THanks for reassuring those of us with curves. I feel fortunate because I have curves and am 6 feet tall, but the expectations when i was growing up sucked because everybody thought if I was so tall I should look like the stick thin tall models. I lifted weights a lot do I could get even more curves- I think if you're healthy and not obese, curves should be encouraged.

I also agree with "Dee" pertaining to body types and not many women have natural curves, but there is butt and boob enhancements (cosmetic surgery) and I had a naturally skinny friend gain some curves through lifting weights- maybe better than pills or surgery.

starrkissed : it is important that woman come to love their body regardless of their shape.

izettl : If that is you in your avatar, let me tell you that you look great! Always excercise is better than surgery or pills to help tone and shape a body, glad to see it worked for you and your friend. Thanks for your comment :)

I wish society would make it easier for women to love their own bodies no matter how curvy or how skinny. We're all beautiful in our own way, but it's so easy to forget that and concentrate on the flaws.

Actually, make that "flaws," since most of them really aren't.

Marisa: Omega-3 can work wonders for women's health, figure and intelectual capacities... great isn't it?. No more feeling guilty about generous hips!

kerryg: you are right, sometimes we go to the extent of seeing flaws where they do not exist! It is important to learn to love your body regardless of its shape. Thanks for your comment.

Yeah! When I was much thinner and healthier, I was still big busted. I was always so embarrassed and tried to minimize it because of the perception that you were still fat with a larger chest. It makes me so angry to see how much the media puts pressure on young ones to have to fit a certain look. Yes, I need to lose weight for my health, but I do NOT have to be Twiggy. Thank goodness people are beginning to realize this.

Great piece.

danieltetreault: Voluptuous is beautiful... Yes! RGraf: It is such a shame that busty woman get embarrassed of their shape, instead of being proud of their curves. Most women do not realize how beautiful they are until they have spent years dieting and trying to hide their real shape. Only when women come to terms with their shapes they become proud of the way they look. Thanks for stopping to comment :-)

Hi Princessa, great hub! I think as woman, the most important thing is to be healthy. There is a healthy weight and there is an unhealthy weight. As far as the media telling us how we should look, I think it's more important that we tell ourselves how we should feel.

I like to eat healthy and go to the gym. Not too much junk and fat and a few glasses of wine. So no matter how much I weigh I know at least my heart is in good shape =)

Arian: Yes, to be within a healthy weight is very important. A healthy diet should be something to aim for not just for women but for the whole family.

I believe that a curvy body type is just an other body type. Thus what is frustratinf for me is that when we happen to consider it a body type by default. Of course being healthier and fitter should be a priority in everyone's life but that should not be an obsession. I have always assumed a bit of flesh on bones sexier than only skin wrapped around skeletons.

Lexie@Sexy Lingerie  says:

While I am a size 14 with full hips and breasts I am afraid the size acceptance really stops at those few size 12's and 14's that are really on the small size. Size acceptance needs to get to real size 14's, 16's, 18's and above. The women you picture are indeed healthy and sexy but not necessarily an indication that plus size women have arrived as they should.

would like to take a moment to introduce you to a great new womens premium denim line. Now the jeans aren't for everyone, the jeans focus on a group that does not get alot of attention. The Curvy shaped females. The jeans are absolutely fabulous for curvy shaped women of all sizes. The brand is Little in the Middle. The thing that makes the brand stand out is that it is sized one size smaller in the waist than in the hips, so it eliminates that awful gap in the back of your jeans that let your rear end hang out while offering a great fit. Just a mention to the curvy shape ladys that someone is thinking of them.

Thanks,
