Gift Cards: The Yes and No as Holiday Gifts
During the Christmas season we often cannot come up with the perfect gift for everyone on our list. Gift cards have made this instance a little easier since we can almost always guess what store our gift recipient shops at. Giving a gift card in a certain amount lets them easily get something the like or will use. The down side to giving a gift card is that it lacks personalization.
Gift cards as a holiday gift should be used with a certain level of distinction. In some instances a holiday gift card for the Christmas season may be a perfect idea. Some of the instances include stocking stuffers, business aquaintances and relatives that are far away.
A gift card stuffed into a Christmas stocking in addition to the normal presents adds as a side thought. It may be a gift card for books since your child loves them. This lets them go out and get a book they like for themselves without you having to worry about them losing cash in the house.
Corporate gift cards are great for business associates or coworkers that you wish to give a gift to for the holiday season. You can look for gift cards that are designed for the company you work for or one in which you think your business associates and coworkers would shop. You may also wish to consider gift cards that have a percentage donated to a worthy charity for business gift recipients.
Sending a gift card to those you care about but do not get to see on a regular basis is another viable option. This gift does not have to be too personalized because you do not see them often so it is not required that you know their likes and dislikes. Gift cards for big shopping stores or even online stores are a great holiday gift item for these recipients.
Some reasons to stay away from gift cards this year are the number of businesses that will be going out of business due to the economy and because the gift is not personalize. Consider doing a bit of homework on the business you are thinking of getting a gift card from.
Some stores like Best Buy, Circuit City and some smaller businesses have been rumored to be going out of business after the holiday season. The last thing you need is to get a gift card for someone and find out it is no good when they go to find the store.
Another reason not to get gift cards for close family members especially children is because it lacks thought, personalization and a kid just does not get so excited about a gift card as he/she would about that mega-truck ramp with accessories. Kids like to open actual presents on Christmas not a gift certificate or card they will have to use whenever their parents take them to use it. A gift card as a side gift or stocking stuffer is okay and the smaller denomination of money is okay too.
If gift cards are the way you have decided to go for the holiday season consider who you are getting them for and check out universal gift cards. Some of these are gift cards for books, ebay gift certificates and amazon gift cards.
