Tips for New Authors on Getting Published
58Gird Your Loins
As the Bible says "Gird your loins" and get ready to dig. I love writing. It doesn't matter what as long as I get to write every day. Fiction is my favorite form of writing and probably the hardest to get published. What you should remember is that the more writing you do the better you get at it.
If you are just getting started there are some things you should do right away. Decide what you want to do. By this I mean what sort of writing you like to do most. Fiction is very demanding but also the most enjoyable form of writing for me. You may like writing articles or essays.
The way I personally started was by using online writers sites like Triond and WeBook to get my work out there and also get some helpful feed back. You won't make a lot of money at first but as time goes by and you improve your skills that will change. To publish fiction I would recommend submitting stories to magazines. There are quite a few magazines that accept submissions by e-mail and really need good content. Before you submit anything study the magazines guidelines for submission and follow them completely. Many magazines want a query letter first to see if they like the idea of your story or if they need it. Look at an issue of the magazine and see what kind of stories or articles they have. Who are their readers? This will help you to write a killer query letter/e-mail tailored to their book and improve your chances of publication.
Now you've written an article and think you're ready to submit it for publication. Great! How many times did you revise it? It usually takes me about 3-4 attempts before I get it the way I really like it and don't be surprised if the magazine asks for some type of revision before it goes to publication. The revisions are done and you submitted a story. Don't stop! Submit as much work as you can as often as you can to better your chances of getting published. You can sell articles to e-zines and sites like Helium and Constant Content. The thing to remember is that you are a writer and writers write. It's hard work and you must learn the rules to getting your work accepted but it's a wonderful job.
