Contemporary Rug With Traditional Decor
How To Use A Contemporary Rug With An Older Style Decor
Most everyone has that one area in their home that never gets update because the decor is something that you have always liked.
Redecorating can go to any extreme from just changing curtains and throw pillows to changing the walls and floors. Because you have so many degrees of decor you want to make sure that you choose the right look so you don't invest a lot of money in something that you are not satisfied with.
When you want to make an older style decor look somewhat new without changing the entire look, you may want to consider adding a contemporary looking rug on your floor. Rugs can come in different shapes, colors, size and patterns. You have so many choices to choose from that you may have a hard time narrowing down your search. In order to find the look that you want you need to decide which type of design would best suit your new look:
- Use simple solid colors when you have bright paint on your walls that is very colorful. If your walls are painted or you have several art pieces on the wall you need to keep your rug simpler by using your basic colors that will blend with the color scheme on your walls.
- If you have dark wood furniture you may want to lighten the room up just a bit by adding a lighter color rug to your floor. If you want to keep the dark look then use a dark color rug to achieve that look.
- Good old black and white has been there from the beginning and it is still great to use today in your rug. Using black and white can help you blend in everything in your room.
Rugs can always compliment any room if you use them in the right way.
So as you see there are several different ways that you can change an older style look by choosing a modern area rug. The selection today is more wide spread than what it was when you first decided on your decor before. In fact, rugs can be made out of fibers from natural resources now which can not only be cost effective but you can have a bright clean look in any room.
Today, rugs are used as one of the fastest ways to redecorate a room. A rug can change the mood of a room, it can change your attitude, and it can even make you feel warmer. Without the choice of rugs our floors would just be floors. Don't be afraid to mix up the colors a little bit by choosing a color that you would not normally go with. By doing that you set a completely new look in your room and you have only changed one thing. It might inspire you to decorate differently and achieve a new look.
There were colors to spark almost every era of home decoration and now you have the opportunity to bring the eras together. It's good to start at the floor when you want to redecorate your room.
Oriental Rugs In A Modern Decor
Avoid An 'Old Fashioned' Look With An Oriental Area Rug
Adding a rug to any room can only make the room feel better. Because color affects our mood, attitude and personality, it is only natural that we look for a positive color in our rugs to accomplish the look we are going for. Some people may want a sophisticated look while others want a look that is all their own. From Victorian style to the eighties style you can come up with a look to satisfy you. The most common decor is using an oriental area rug down on the floor instead of carpeting all through the room. There are several reasons for using the oriental rugs.
Oriental rugs have been around for centuries. They were put together by hand and ensured that each stitch would hold good for decades of wear. The rugs were made to be strong enough to pass on from each generation. While oriental rugs were once not very common, today you can find them in allot of homes because of their affordability. Oriental rugs were once very high priced but today their prices are quite comparable with other floor decor.
Oriental rugs have a distinct older look that may make you fear that your room will also turn out to be 'old fashioned' if you use them. In order to avoid that old fashioned look you simply need to follow some basic guidelines when decorating with an oriental rug.

An interesting hub and a great read all about decorating with red and red rugs.
- Since there are usually several colors found in an oriental rug, choose one of the colors that you will focus your decor on. Choose a color that you know you will not have too much difficulty finding ways to add it into your decor. It's best to choose a primary color such as red, blue, green, brown, yellow, or orange if you are not sure what color you like the best. When all else fails you can choose earth tones, even with oriental rugs.
- Make sure that the rug covers what you want it to cover. You can purchase the large triangle oriental rugs to cover a large part of a room but you can also purchase runners and small pieces that will match your large rug to accent the room.
- For every old fashioned piece of decor you purchase, you must purchase a contemporary piece to go along with it. For example, if you find a really old fashioned lamp that would go great with the oriental style rug, then purchase something that also has a modern flair to it such as drawer pulls or art work that will enhance the primary color that you have chosen to pull from.
- Paint your walls using a neutral color that coordinates with the Oriental rug color you choose.
- Add live plants when possible to make the room look new and not old fashioned.
As you see it doesn't take a lot of adjustment on your current decor to make your room look great and up to date. It just takes a little bit of planning so you don't fall back into the 'old fashioned' look while trying to add an oriental rug to your decor.

Nice to hear from you.
Singapore - you could always consider a bamboo rug or maybe even a cotton one.
I think I have to go with traditional. I think traditional goes better with wood, especially natural wood floors, furniture, etc. And, with the wood floors, a traditional area rug is very nice.
Thanks,
For my house I think the contemporary rugs are the way to go, thanks for the education.
Glad it helped!
Rugs really are the easiest way to bring new life to a room.
Thanks for this idea! I was looking for an inexpensive way to bring new life to a room and hadn't considered this! I am all over it! :-)
Yes, rugs are an easy way to bring new life to any room.
It's just amazing to see what a new rug can do.
Great site. We used a contemporary rug to liven up our lounge. We were considering haveing a new hardwood floor layed but when we purchased 2 rugs layed them down, there was no point. The rugs refreshed the look of the room and saved us a few dollars.
Thanks for sharing, some info and suggestions in this entry.
