Argentina and Soccer

Argentina is located in South America, it´s capital city is Buenos Aires and it´s the eight largest country in the world after Russia, Canada, China, USA, Brazil, Australia and India. It has an enormous extension of 3,757,407 km2 with all kinds of climates: from tropical to polar. During the last century, Argentina was a mixture of races and cultures that slowly gave way to the passionate tango loving, politically passionate and soccer loving people they are today. Argentina soccer.

Soccer first made it´s appearance in Argentina during the XIX century with the arrival of British ships. The ship´s crew killed time by playing soccer in the fields near the docks. In 1867 the Hoggs brothers along with other members founded the Buenos Aires Football club. With the arrival of Professor Watson Hutton, private school (most of the British) started to have soccer in their curriculums.Soccer in Argentina=Passion!

Meanwhile everywhere else in Argentina a passion for the sport began to develop. The first teams were formed with teams that became Argentine soccer starting point: River Plate, Boca Junior´s Ferrocarril Oeste and others.

FIFA Fédération Internationale de Football Association (French for International Federation of Association Football) organized the first world cup or "Mundial de Futbol Soccer" Uruguay 1930" in 1930 which was held in Uruguay. Thirteen countries participated and the final match was won by Uruguay with Argentina in second place. This World Cup was just a taste of how magnificent Argentina soccer would become.

Argentina has won the Soccer World Cup two times: in 1978 in the Soccer World Cup held in Argentina and in 1986 in Mexico "Mundial de Futbol Mexico 1986" where the controversial (see video below) "hand of God" Maradona goal took place against England.

Some of the greatest Argentina soccer players: Gabriel Bautista, Hernan Crespo and Maradona have contributed in soccer being a way of life in Argentina where when the team is playing, the country stops to watch.
