Arizona Highway 260: Junkyard Photo Shoot
71There is a story behind all this junk. I'm sure of it.
This is a huge junkyard, maybe 40 miles from Phoenix in a little berg outside of Strawberry, AZ. We stopped off just to look at all the accumulation...quite a sight even from the road. Piles and piles of bikes, cars, trucks, and every vehicle imaginable just piled up for a good few acres.
The guy who owns the place lives in the back of the junkyard, in a trailer covered with junk. We know, because we went back to meet him...and to purchase the bicycle part I found I needed among all the rest of the stuff. The inside of the house is just as one would imagine it would be, though parts of it were clear. The irony of this is, the man is probably at least a millionaire, if you consider the worth of some of the antiques and one-of-a-kind items--especially motorcycles and unusual old junked out vehicles. Yet he chooses to live this way.
Evidently, this junk yard is part of the local color and has been featured in several Phoenix magazines and newspapers. I'd never heard of it before, however.
This is what road trips are good for, ;).
It was an enormously hot day, but there were some really cool things to be seen, so I couldn't resist bringing out my camera. The color amid all the metal....and the metal gleaming in the sun was something to see. I also now know why Arizona was picked for that animated, funny little film, "Cars." It just kind of lends itself to stranded old vehicles on the stretches of desert highway.
Behold, the car "Mater" in the end three shots. Some of these old trucks seem to take on personalities of their own...the two headlights standing in for eyes, the grill, a big cheesy smile.
Still, there is something nostalgic and inherently folksy-cool about old trucks--old machinery period. To think that this was once state-of-the-art technology.

Very arty looking junk! very cool! Kartika
Cool stuff. I would love to just wander around and dream of the stuff. What was, what could be.
Thanks for sharing.
Hi, Kartika! Yeah, I thought it was arty looking junk, lol. I just need to sell posters.
Thanks, Paper Moon. Yeah, that's it...the potential and all the energy. Thank you for stopping by to look. :)
If machines could talk...each has a story, a tale of a useful life providing service, comfort, and pleasure to their owners...sort of like a graveyard for retired servants...Thanks for this interesting slice of Arizona...Larry
Hi, Maven/Larry. By now, you know we like exploring little slices of Arizona, lol. This one is really tucked away. And yeah, funny to think each piece in that junk yard has a story.
Live reporting from Arizona. Very nice. Btw, did you notice that the guy is also advertising for Coca cola? The bikes have become old and cars have been modernized but coca cola could stand the test of time and has remained the same.
Hi, emdi. Yes. And there is actually quite a market for old Coca Cola signs. That machine...or the sign is probably worth some $. lol And I guess its longevity is why Warren Bufett owns Coke. Haha...and yeah, I do the live reporting. Seriously, I have only lived here for 4 1/2 years, and the state has so much...I'd say...strange stuff that really enjoy it.
are you a professional photographer? impressive. thoroughly enjoyed this hub!
Hi, Cosette, :). I'm working on that professional thing. lol. Actually, I guess you could say I am...since in journalism you do have to take photos as well as write. But as far as selling art photography...I am working on it. Thanks for coming by!
Oh dear Lita, I have to admit that looks like heaven to me!!!
Great hub! There are some very interesting similar junk yards for antique vehicles along the road between Phoenix and towards the Chiracahua forest (somewhere near the military installation).
earnest- haha, you must like either cars and motorcycles, or just junk. ?? It was fun to see. Thank you for becoming a fan and for reading. :)
Jerilee- AZ is just loaded with strange and fun things to just happen across. I've lived here 4 1/2 years & am still amazed. This is the first time I've hear of the Chiracahua forest, for instance. Thanks!
What a great subject for a photo shoot! How much fun that must have been.
Hi, Egg. It was fun! Lots of sun, though. A very hot, hot day. Thanks for coming by, :)
I salivated at the sight of the cars trucks and bikes.
Cool! I like the idea of someone salivating all over my photos, ;). Seriously, it was a really interesting place to check out. Thanks, pappyjim. :)
