Most Popular Arm Tattoo Designs

Arm tattoo designs typically are done in one of two styles either Japanese Tattoo design or Americana sailor tattoo designs.

Japanese Arm Tattoo Designs

Far and beyond any other arm tattoo design are Japanese tattoo designs. This is probably the most common style of design to get on one's arms and for good reasons. These tattoos are often done in a very large and colorful style and look great! Some of the most common Japanese tattoo designs for a full sleeve tattoo or arm tattoo are:

Koi Fish - Koi fish are very popular for sleeve tattoos as the fish is typically very and skinny and shapes perfectly around an arm. With a splash of water behind the fish a full arm or sleeve tattoo can easily be achieved with one huge and beautiful design.

Cherry Blossoms - Cherry blossoms branches are another common tattoo subject for traditional Japanese tattoos and also among those getting their arms tattooed. Again the long rectangular shape of a cherry blossom branch works perfectly for an arm tattoo. The shape of the branch looks perfect on an arm tattoo.

Water - Typically traditional Japanese tattoos will often incorporate beautifully blue colored water in the background and this is often used on sleeve and arm tattoo designs.

Japanese Gods or Deities - Another popular subject for a forearm tattoo especially or even a shoulder tattoo is a Japanese god or deity. There are thousands of great images and stories to go along with these deities all of which makes for a great tattoo design.

Americana Arm Tattoo Designs

Second only to Japanese tattoo designs are Americana tattoo designs for the arm. These include more traditional sailor tattoos and often have an old school feel. Things like pinup girl tattoos, anchor tattoos or even a flag or ship are all common arm tattoos with an Americana design.

Types of Arm Tattoos

The category of arm tattoos is really pretty broad and can include a wide variety of tattoo locations, shapes and sizes as well as designs. Here are some of the most common arm tattoos.

Sleeve Tattoos

Sleeve tattoos can be done as a full sleeve covering the whole arm, half sleeve tattoo going from the shoulder to forearm and then their is the quarter arm tattoo typically from the wrist up to the middle of the forearm. Whatever sleeve tattoo you choose is up to you they all look equally great.

Wrist Tattoos

Another common place to get a tattoo that can still be considered an arm tattoo is on the wrist and extending up slightly above the wrist into the forearm. One of the most common designs for males are to get wrist tattoos and let the flames from the tattoo go up the forearm a little bit. Tribal designs are also very common using the same space.

As you can see arm tattoos are very popular in face the most popular location of all tattoo designs. There are a wide variety of different styles and even locations within the arm to get a tattoo done.

I have a headstone tattoo on the inside of my upper left arm (weird place for a tattoo on a girl, huh?). I was wondering..... if I happen to do some weight training, would an increase in the size of my bicep make the tattoo look distorted? I wouldn't be flexing the muscle like a body builder, but I was just wondering.

Hey emmabalmer-

It is a potential that yes it could distort through weight training. However, from experience and other tattoo artists the general accepted bleif and practice is that you would have to gain muscle hard and fast to distort it. Normal weight raining alone will not do this. If you start taking steriods, work out for 5 hours a day or something where you are trying really hard to gain muscle then it could distort. But it is highly unlikley if you are not doing steriods and you are just working out.

Could point though and for women the advice should be thoguht about before hand because a belly tattoo could get distorted during pregnancy so it is always better to go for arm, back, leg etc...Stomach maybe later in life? Anyway just something to think about and thank for the great questions!
