Is Aromatherapy Pseudoscience or the Real Thing?
In this day and age with fitness and alternative health solutions being more popular than ever, aromatherapy is pretty much mainstream. You can buy candles, shampoos, essential oils, and even erasers that with aromatic qualities to give pleasure to your olfactory glands. But does all this excitement about organic aromatherapy methods of wellness even have a basis? Are we getting worked up and excited over nothing?
Aromatherapy has been around for thousands of years. Traditional cultures around the world including the ancient Egyptians have used aromatherapy. And even today, we can't deny the effect that certain scents have on us. Have you ever been caught in the moment as an attractive member of the opposite sex walked by and you caught a whiff of their intoxicating scent? How did it make you feel? Good, right? This is a real life example of the impact that aromatherapy has in our lives. Scents have power and they influence our well-being and state of mind in profound ways.
The facts point to the conclusion that aromatherapy does indeed have a basis. Research has shown a close connection between positive and negative experiences in our immune system and our psyche. Our psyche is closely related to our mental state. Studies have shown that smell is the sense most strongly connected to memory. And we are largely a product of our memories and experiences, so the impact of scent in our lives cannot be underestimated. Who would deny the smile a pleasant scent brings to the face? Who would deny the effect of a bad odor on your disposition?
However, research has cast doubts on the claim that organic aromatherapy treatments actually cure specific illnesses. Many die hard supporters of aromatherapy swear by its effectiveness though. But ultimately, there isn't any hard scientific proof to support the claim that it cures illnesses. There is a strong possibility that the healing that takes place after many organic aromatherapy treatments is due to a placebo effect, which refers to the phenomenon where people deeply believe a particular treatment is working to heal them. So under that theory, the healing that accompanies aromatherapy use is purely mental. On the other hand, it is accepted that aromatherapy and scents have a strong effect on one's state of being.
