If you’re planning on designing a room in an Art Deco inspired theme, or just want a unique lamp for your room an art deco lamp is a good choice that can tie the whole room together. The art deco style has several different aspects to it that are unique to the time period it was popular in. If you’re looking for an original antique, make sure you look out for duplicates and replicas.  Also check to see if the seller you are receiving it from will rewire the light for you or if you are responsible for any light rewiring that has to be done.  If antiques are out of your price range, there are also many art deco table lamps that were inspired by the originals and the time period as a whole.

The Art Deco Movement

The style as a whole used lots of geometric shapes, lavish ornaments, and repeated patterned images known at motifs.  It also focused on modernism in design.  One of the best examples of a building done in Art Deco design is the Chrysler Building in New York City.

Art Deco Lamp Characteristics

Art Deco Lamps have a wide range of characteristics that make people consider them part of the movement. Most have a orthodox, straight, industrial look that makes use of a wide range of angles and squared shades that can be either glass or paper. Many have stems that are made to look like human figures holding up the light. If they don’t employ figures in the stem, many of the Art Deco desk lamps employ the use of freestanding figures on the base of the lamp.

Most of the lamps are made from metal, but a few were made of wood or other resins. But the focal point of many of the lamps is the Art Deco lampshade. These antique glass lamp shades were all very unique and could be anything from clear and angular to rounded and filled with colorful art glass.

Art Deco Interior Design

An antique lamp can make a great addition to a room designed in the art deco style and can even be the focal point of the room if it is large enough, such as an art deco floor lamp.  If you’re attempting to design a room in the art deco style, here are some general guidelines.

  • Use wallpaper with Art Deco inspired themes to incorporate motifs into your room.
  • Always use bold colors.
  • Try to use geometric designs, especially in your rugs and wallpapers.
  • Try to find appliances and other accessories that are more tall and thin than short and fat.
