Art Therapy for Health
Art therapy is a wonderful way to help those who have experienced trauma in their lives because it is a useful and therapeutic way to show self-expression especially for those who find it difficult to communicate verbally.
It could be deemed that art therapy has become a form of psychotherapy because it allows safety when emotions and deep feelings start coming to the fore. Ideally the client is encouraged to draw or paint freely and this way the subconscious instinctively begins to reveal deeply rooted problems and brings them up to the surface.
Of course it is not just used for revealing traumas, it can be also used beautifully for self-development and this can help the person to identify their own inner turmoil's and any conflicts that they may be harbouring. Even when it is hard to describe or discuss these inner emotions, the simple form of a creative process can help to bring any inner conflict up to the surface naturally and without forcing.
Because art has such a fluidity about it, it is a perfect way of expressing oneself and it is very easy to be able to define strong emotions such as anger and sorrow even if there is no artistic talent or previous experience.
Other ways of bringing emotion to the fore or releasing inner traumas are:
Meditation
Traditionally used for relaxation purposes and to ease tension and anxieties, meditation can also be used for therapeutic purposes because visualisations can help the practitioner to view situations or events whilst in a calm environment and help to replay them in their mind and amend or accept them. Meditation can also help to create inner peace and tranquillity.
Writing
Writing is very therapeutic especially when trying out journaling as this gives an excellent opportunity to pour out feelings and emotions in the relative privacy of the written word.
Creative Pursuits
Try sculpting or modelling as this can provide the opportunity to relinquish built up tensions and frustrations through carving out images conjured up from the subconscious soul.
