How to Quickly Create Article Content

What's A Content Spinner And Why Use One?

Although not widely known, content spinners have actually been around for a few years now. Article, or content spinning is using an original article as the basis to generate an unlimited number of new unique versions of the text. There are several content spinners available, and many considered them an essential tool for article marketing.

The new articles present the same concepts and ideas as the original, but written in different ways. They all are grammatically correct and perfectly readable, but each is unique, differing from the others in terms of the sentences and words used.

Why would you want to do that?

Simple: To avoid the duplicate content penalty at search engines like Google.

Let's say you've written an article. You've done your article directory submissions and the article has also been picked up by a few webmasters and used on their sites. When Google comes along and analyzes those pages, it can tell that they all contain the same content.

You might have heard that you don't have to worry about duplicate content because each page has other content on it in addition to the article.

Unfortunately, that's not the case.

You see, when it analyzes pages, Google doesn't simply compare the full text of the pages against each other, but many short excerpts from them. It then works out how many text snippets from the different pages are the same. A duplicate content flag is raised when the percentage of matches goes above a predetermined threshold.

In anycase, site navigation and other standard elements often account for much of the page content besides the article itself. Where it's the same on each page of a site, Google is usually able to differentiate it from the actual content and so discount in its comparison.

In the past you could simply replace words in your article with synonyms to avoid the duplicate content filter. That doesn't work anymore. Not unless it's done to the point that your article no longer makes sense to a human reader. And even then Google still might spot it. Gathering dust on my hard disk is a Windows application I bought which does that.

Having ascertained the pages it's looking at contain duplicate content, Google chooses the one it thinks is most relevant to the keyword phrase the searcher entered. It then filters out the other pages, usually leaving only the preferred article page visible in the results.

This means that if you have syndicated an article on your site, whenever the page of one of the other websites using it is considered more relevant to the keyword being searched than yours, your page simply won't appear in the results. It's your article, but someone else is getting the benefit ... not with you, but at your expense.

What Google Say About Duplicate Content

The duplicate content penalty isn't just a theory or something I'm making up. Google state that:

"During our crawling and when serving search results, we try hard to index and show pages with distinct information. This filtering means, for instance, that if your site has articles in "regular" and "printer" versions and neither set is blocked in robots.txt or via a noindex meta tag, we'll choose one version to list."

In short, where there are duplicates, Google picks one of them to display in the search results.

"In the rare cases in which we perceive that duplicate content may be shown with intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive our users, we'll also make appropriate adjustments in the indexing and ranking of the sites involved."

In addition, Google might take things further and make an adjustment to the rankings of entire sites it considers to be cheating. But just what is considered an "intent to manipulate our rankings and deceive" by Google?

Well, if your reasons for submitting to article directories include getting more backlinks in order to rank higher, you can safely assume you know at least one activity that is. A lot of the value of submitting is lost if those backlinks are discounted.

"However, we prefer to focus on filtering rather than ranking adjustments ... so in the vast majority of cases, the worst thing that'll befall webmasters is to see the "less desired" version of a page shown in our index."

Google tactfully omit to mention here that the "less desired" page may be on another site!

Here's some more about the most relevant parts of Google's duplicate content policy with a link to the rest on the Google blog.

Popular article directories and major websites have many inbound links, a high PageRank and strong web presence overall. So unless your own site is well established, when you submit an article, its page on one of these sites is more likely to come up in the search results than the copy of the article your website.

How Content Spinning Works

With an article spinner and a little effort, you can take a base article and quickly transform it to create many new and unique versions. Then you can use one version on your own website and another for submitting to article directories, or for publication by other webmasters.

In fact, you can even submit a different version of your article to each directory. Whilst perhaps only worthwhile doing for the top directories, this will certainly increase how often your article comes up in the search results, because for every article directory with the identical article, Google will choose only one to display in the search results.

Spun articles are so good that you could theoretically make an entire website from one article, using a different version on each page. To a search engine (and in fact), each page is unique because the structure, sentences and words between them vary so much.

The article spinning concept is simple. Let's look at exactly how it works. Below are 3 sentences:

1. Affiliate marketing is an easy income source once you understand how it's done.

2. When you've mastered the basics, it's not difficult to make good money as an affiliate.

3. Once you've learnt the basic techniques, affiliate marketing can be extremely lucrative.

The three sentences carry the same general meaning, yet all are completely different.

We can expand on this by further breaking down each sentence. Instead of "Affiliate marketing is an easy income source" in sentence 1, I could say:

"You can make plenty of money in affiliate marketing" or

"Working as an affiliate marketer is an easy path to a solid income" or

"Affiliate marketing can be highly profitable"

Again, in each phrase the meaning conveyed is much the same. All of them will also fit nicely with the second part of the sentence, "once you understand how it's done."

When using a content spinner, you go through your article in a similar fashion, writing new sections with alternative wording. These can be short or long; sentences, phrases, entire paragraphs or just words. This provides the article spinner software lots of different bits from which it makes random selections to bind together as a new article.

The spinner will always process content in the same order as it's written, so despite the spun articles being made up of many bits of text randomly joined together, they are always readable and make sense.

No matter how many bits of alternative text you provide in your article, the content spinner can run through them all so fast that it can create hundreds of unique combinations in seconds. With each combination you have a brand new, original article.

Using An Article Spinner

In most article spinners the pipe "|" character is used to tell the software that the next bit of text is a variation of the last. You may know from Regex, programming or Boolean search commands that the pipe represents "OR". It's function in article spinners is the same.

In order for the article spinner to recognize the start and end point of the text on either side of a pipe or set of pipes, the sections must be marked off on each side, usually by wrapping them in curly braces "{" & "}" .

Here's how you'd write your article for your content spinner, using our example above again:

{Affiliate marketing is an easy income source once you understand how it's done|When you've mastered the basics, it's not difficult to make good money as an affiliate|Once you've learnt the basic techniques, affiliate marketing can be extremely lucrative}.

Now we'll put in the additional phrases we wrote for sentence 1 by nesting the braces within each other:

{{Affiliate marketing is an easy income source|You can make plenty of money in affiliate marketing|Working as an affiliate marketer is an easy path to a solid income|Affiliate marketing can be highly profitable} once you understand how it's done|When you've mastered the basics, it's not difficult to make good money as an affiliate|Once you've learnt the basic techniques, affiliate marketing can be extremely lucrative}.

If it looks complicated, read it again. It's really not.

To be frank though, adding the pipes and braces as you write is much easier than attempting to work back and figure out something that's already been written. Doing it yourself, you already have the alternatives in your head and are simply recording them.

A Free Article / Content Spinner

I had to buy an article spinner out of my own pocket, but now there's a free content spinner called Jetspinner you can use instead.

Although free (for how long I can't say) it's not a limited or demo version. Jetspinner is as good as any of the article spinners on the market. The article spinner I bought still sells for over $90, in many respects it's identical, but it doesn't have Jetspinner's data merge function!

And if you want, Jetspinner's output can be sent directly to the Jetsubmitter article submitter. Doing so enables you to send out a unique version of your article to each of 400+ article directories. A handy trick.

Because it's still new, relatively few people of heard of Jetspinner. But as there are no other free article spinners like it, in time it's sure to become extremely popular.

I suggest you start using it right away. The reason being that right now you will face much less competition from other article marketeers spinning their articles, than you are likely to face in 6-12 months time.

That means it will be much easier for you to brand yourself or your site as a topic expert than it will for others who come later.

You will also have generated hundreds of highly targeted links to your pages in the gradual way search engines like, which no competitor can suddenly catch up with without being punished by the search engines for an unnaturally quick growth in links.

There's a bonus for new users during the launch period as well. You can find out the details at Jetspinner.

Alternatively, you can take a look at some of the article content spinners currently on sale: Artemis Pro, Article Post Robot, Article Uniqualizer and Content Rewriter Pro.

Getting All The Work Done For You

If you're lazy, or simply don't have the time to use an article spinner (I understand it's not for everyone), or write lots of unique articles, then you really only have 2 options if you want to succeed with article marketing:

  1. Pay people to write articles for you ($10 - $20 each)
  2. Use a content service like the ones below

Article Underground offers a route that requires far less effort, but predictably, costs considerably more.

400 exclusive content articles are provided each month to a maximum of 350 people. These are not the usual PLR fare, but are written by professionals and SEO optimized for specific keyword phrases, which are selected based on profitability (high traffic keywords, with high click bids, and low competition).

By linking to them from the Article Underground's network of high PR blogs, your article pages are guaranteed traffic. This aspect isn't talked about much, but to meit's more than half the job. Links like that are gold, and mean you don't have to waste time finding directories, or exchanging / buying links. An ingenious idea.

Even if you don't think Article Underground is for you, I'd head over there anyway just to download the free PDF reports, Words = Money (How to Use Articles to Build Profitable Adsense Web Sites) and "Ban Proofing Your Web Sites (to make long term money with article marketing) which include over 3 hours of free video.

Inside iContentRobot

Another option is the brand new iContentRobot content generator, from Google Snatch author Latif. Branded as a solution that creates unique articles for you in just 3 seconds (at the push of a button), this is perhaps the perfect solution for lazy article marketers simply looking for content. The system allows you to create an unlimited number of articles for each of 50 different keywords each month in different niche markets.

According to Latif, his people create the content. It's not created from PLR content, content snippets extracted from around the web, or anything like that. It's actually real content -- grammatically correct, LSI, keyword targeted, proof read content.

I really cannot belive there are no comments yet. People should be crawling all over this post. I have suffered a duplicate content penalty that has stopped my site from climbing in the search engines. Since using Jetspinner I have been able to re-write all of my pages and loaded them up to my site. This is a great post, the first I have seen of its kind and is the answer to my ranking problems. Thank you, thank you very much.

Thanks for your kind words, Terry -- I'm glad you found the post helpful.

Unfortunately, relatively few people have even heard of the duplicate content penalty and of those who have, the majority simply do not believe it really exists.

I found this post VERY useful. Thanks for taking the time to thorougly explain article spinning. As far as I'm concerned- article spinning is the WAY to go if anyone wants to get ANY value from article marketing. What's the use of submitting ONE article to hundreds of article directories when you won't get the benefit - since most of the submissions will be seen as duplicates. But by spinning that SAME one article before submitting it to the article directories, you end up with hundreds of UNIQUE versions and benefit from HUNDREDS of backlinks... from the SAME article.

I use article spinning to specifically SEDUCE the search engines. For more information on how I do this, see my free report: How YOU Can Seduce The 900-Pound Google Gorilla... using Article Spinning - http://www.WebsiteContentRiches.com/SeduceGoogleGo

Give it a try makemoney, it's as good as any script you can buy. Just remember to allow your articles time to bear fruit. The secret is to just keep producing and submitting, instead of spending time checking your progress. Some of your articles will do better than others, and one day you'll suddenly find your site has hundreds of backlinks.

An extremely useful post explaining Google's duplicate content penalty, and what you can do about it. Well researched and written. I've never used Jetspinner before, but you can bet I'll be taking a look at it now. WIth a bit more effort, I'l lbe able to turn one article into 5-6 minimum, which is a *huge* bonus for me! Thanks for the great Hub.

Thanks for the kind words nichesite.

I don't think you've fully grasped the power of article spinners if you're only expecting to be able to make 5-6 variations of your articles. For the same amount of work, an article spinner can give you 50-100 variations!

ink  says:

Glad you like the article, Shronika.

With a content spinner, the quality that comes out depends on the quality you put in. So if you put meaniful content in, you will get meaningful content out, as you can see from the examples I put in the article above.

so my curiousity got the best of me and I decided to check out your jetspinner. What a piece of crap. I did 2 original articles and asked it to spin only 3 additional articles from each. When I did a 'merge and compare' in WORD all jetspinner did was change the paragraph breaks. every single word was IDENTICAL

ink  says:

DMartelonline: Before you delcare something that hundreds of people are using successfully a "piece of crap," you might want to try following the instructions.

Article spinners work by merging the VARIATIONS YOU WRITE. That does not mean writing 2 articles, but editing one article to provide alternative words, phrases and sentences for those within the current article.

For example, you might provide 3 alternatives for the first 4 sentences, call them 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, etc., where the number refers to the sentence numbers 1 - 4.

The spinner then chooses one of the alternatives for each of the sentences at random and "glues" them together to form a new article. So your first 4 sentences after spinning might be 1B 2C 3A 4B, or 1C 2A 3B 4A, etc.

Of course, it needn't be limited to sentences. You can do the same thing with words or, at the other extreme, entire paragraphs.

Every single word was identical in your case, because you did not provide any alternative words to those already in the base article.

IF you are expecting just to be able to push a button and do no work, you're in the wrong place.

Software that can create QUALITY READABLE articles at the push of a button without any work on your part costs hundreds of dollars.

All the cheaper solutions output junk, simply swapping words for others. And as Google is smart enough to understand synonyms, it doesn't get past the duplicate content filtering anyway.

ink  says:

the fact of the matter is that it states it will rewrite complete articles. I have 50 original articles that I thought would be nice to see what they looked like re-written. I didn't expect to have only line breaks changed :) I also didn't mean my post to be so nasty and I apologize for that! I wasn't busting you - just their claim (on their own website) that it would re-write an article. In fact it doesn't.

ink  says:

No problem, DMartelonline. I don't want to get into semantics, but with a little work you could turn your 50 articles into 500 or more.

If you only require 10 - 20 unique variations of each article, providing the spinner with alternative wording for every other sentence should be sufficient.

So basically we're talking about re-writing 50% of an article, and at the click of a button, turning that 1 1/2 original articles you've writtten into 10 or 20 different articles that are just as good as if you sat there and wrote them all out yourself.

Why would you want so many versions of an article? So you can submit a different version to each directory, hubpage or squidoo lens, with none of them pushing the others or the version on your website out of the search results as duplicate content.

Yes, I can see the value in it. Out of curiosity I looked up a couple of other ones today and I actually found one that does take the content and does rewrite it. It does have a couple of quirky things in it, but overall it does a decent job. If you dont' mind spending 10-15 minutes proofreading it after the spinning is done that is :)

Here's the site: http://www.freecontentrewrite.com/rewriter/

It's not perfect but it's as good as anything else I've found and it does not require you to give it options. Just make sure you double check what it spits out because it does have some quirks.

I am working with 500 word articles and to be frank about it since I type over 100 words a minute if I'm going to type in variations, I might as well just retype the article with the variations as use the spinner :)

ink  says:

DMartelonline: You said, "I am working with 500 word articles and to be frank about it since I type over 100 words a minute if I'm going to type in variations, I might as well just retype the article with the variations as use the spinner"

I once thought like that, but I was wrong, and so are you.

How long it would take you to write 100 variations of an article? Whatever your answer, its definately a LOT more time than writing it out 4 times. But 4 variations of each sentence will be enough to ensure each one of those 100 articles is compelety unique when using an article spinner.

Using your own timing of 100 wpm:

5 minutes per article x 100 = 500 minutes = 8 hours and 20 minutes.

Versus 5 minutes x 4 = 20 minutes using the article spinner

That's 8 hours difference!

And to be honest, I doubt you can write each and every article in 5 minutes, so the time difference would be even greater. :)

Here's a sample from the content re-writer you mention, using the first two paragraphs of my article above:

"[Although not widely known], the [content spinners have actually been around (deleted: for) a few years now]. Article, the content or uses a spinning [original article as a(was: the) basis to generate an unlimited] offer [new (deleted: unique) versions of the text]. [There are several] spinners content [available, and many] of them regarded as an indispensable tool for the marketing of product.

[(The) new articles have [the same concepts and ideas that(was: as) the original, but written in different ways. They are all grammatically correct and perfectly] legible, [but each is unique], different [from (the) others in terms of] words and phrases used."

To make comparison easy, I've put the sections that are unchanged from the original between square brackets "[ ]" Minor changes of single, mainly stop words are indicated in brackets.

A couple of things are immediately obvious:

1. Hardly any of the content has changed.

2. The only parts in the re-write that make sense and are grammatically correct are the ones that haven't been changed and are the same as they were in the original.

There's no way you could use that without extensive, almost total re-writing.

Perhaps even worse, the differences are too minor and would almost certainly fail Google's duplicate content checking, because, as I explained in my article, Google compares many small excerpts or strings to see how many are the same (and here many are). Google also understands synonyms and so will spot most if not all of the word substitutions, like "indispensable" replacing "essential" in the original.

So using the tool you suggest means re-writing every OUTPUT article which would be 100 to get a hundred articles you can use.

Using Jetspinner (or other content spinners ) would require writing 4 variations for every sentence in your INPUT article (equivalent to writing 4 articles) and clicking a button to get a 100 or more grammatically correct articles that make sense.

Pretty clear which is less work ...

In the end the choice is yours, but whatever solution you decide on, take note that articles created by the tool you suggest will not make it past Google, unless you re-write not only the bits it has changed, but also a lot more of the original content it leaves unchanged.

I'm just getting started with JetSpinner I'm using a product cal dupefreepro to check the % uniqueness of the 2 (random) resulting articles - what sort of % unique content should I be aiming for?

ink  says:

20% is generally considered safe, but personally I aim for considerably more. All it takes is a bit more time preparing alternatives for the spinner.

Why am I not happy with 20%? Because in reality, duplicate content is not calculated using a flat percentage scale over the entire page. As I wrote above, "when it analyzes pages, Google doesn't simply compare the full text of the pages against each other, but many short excerpts from them. It then works out how many text snippets from the different pages are the same. A duplicate content flag is raised when the percentage of matches goes above a predetermined threshold."

However, I simplified things a little with the last sentence. For some insight into the bigger picture, see http://www.stuntdubl.com/2006/06/12/dupe-content/

Great Hub.

IMHO, even the best and more expensive automatic rewriter produces results that should be double or triple checked (automatic doesn't imply intelligence). The best that can be said of an automatic rewriter is that their output is acceptable.

A spinner is a powerful tool when its operation is fully understood (although the human should make the harder work). The worst that can be said of a spinner is that their output is acceptable.

Interesting read. I set up an article directory (http://www.morethanarticles.com) about 18 months ago and its full of syndicated articles that can be found on many other websites. Since this is the only content for the site, according to the duplicate content theory, I should not get traffic from Google. But I do, about 50-100 visitors a day.

This wasn't the case early in the directory's life. I struggled to get any traffic at all from Google and its only in the last 6 months that things have changed. And the thing that made a difference was reworking which areas of the site I let Google look at.

In the directory each article has its own page. But this page links to 2 other pages, one offering a plain text, the other an HTML version. So on the site there are 3 versions of the same article, albeit for very good reasons.

As I went through the site during an update I decided to exclude googlebot, using robots.txt, from the directories that held the plain text and HTML versions of the articles. I also included nofollow tags in the links to these pages and put a noindex tag on the pages themselves.

The result? My pages went from the supplemental to the main index and I started getting traffic in good numbers from Google. My conclusion has to be that duplicate content within a domain is much more of an issue to Google than duplicate content across many domains. I'm not saying you will get to page 1 with duplicate content, but its perhaps not such a downer as you might think. At least that's my experience.

Nick

ink  says:

Hi Nick, duplicate content within a domain is a major issue, but another thing that probably helped you was the site's age. As time passes trust increases, as it does with more inbound links you'll be getting. If you're doing things right, eventually your site will be seen as more of an authority than some of the others with the same articles. But it's a faster and easier start to avoid any duplicate content in the first place and not face any obstacles to getting on page 1.

Mike,

Properly spun articles are just seen as unique articles by SE's. There's no way to trace back the original, because there isn't really an original. In effect, in re-writing for the spinner you have created anywhere between 3 - 5 unique base articles, all the sentences (or other fragments) of which the article spinner combines in a myriad different ways to create new articles. Think of passwords: how many unique combinations are there in a 5 digit numerical password? It's so many because for each digit, there is a range of 10 possible values. In our case, we only have a range of 3 - 5 possible values... BUT our password is 20 - 30 "digits" long, each digit being a consecutive sentence or sentence fragment in the article. That's a lot of possible combinations.
