The second Article of Faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints states the following:

"We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression."

This article teaches us simply that each person is responsible for the sins they commit, no for sins that are done by others. We also will not be punished by Adam taking the fruit that was forbidden by God. I will cover each of these topics in brief. I have tried to provide links to articles on the LDS.org website for additional information on these topics. There is a great wealth of information available on this site, more than I could provide here.

Being Punished For Our Own Sins

We are taught that if we are not clean then we are not clean able to dwell in the presence of our Heavenly Father. We know that we will be judged for the sins that we ourselves commit. In Jeremiah we read," Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth." (Jeremiah 23:5). We are also taught that Christ will be a merciful judge, which for most of us is a good thing.

Adams Transgression

The price for this for Adams transgression was paid for by the Savior eliminating the need for anyone else needing to be punished. But don't think that this transgression is simply pushed aside by members of the LDS church. In the Book of Mormon we read that "Adam fell that men might be; and men are, that they might have joy." (2 Nephi 2:25) LDS believe that without the fall of Adam we would not exist and that Adam and Eve would still exist in he Garden. The Plan of Salvation was put into motion with the Fall of Adam.

The next verse in the Book of Mormon says, "And the Messiah cometh in the fulness of time, that he may redeem the children of men from the fall. And because that they are redeemed from the fall they have become free forever, knowing good from evil; to act for themselves and not to be acted upon, save it be by the punishment of the law at the great and last day, according to the commandments which God hath given." This is a great comfort, to know that the Savior will redeem all Children of God from the Fall of Adam. Because of this redemption all mankind will receive immortality and eternal life, free gifts from our Savoir for doing nothing more that being part of the 2/3rd of the host of heaven that stayed with our Heavenly Father.
