Asbestos is a substance that Mankind had used for centuries. This natural mineral is mined and was used to help provide insulation for buildings. The reason that Asbestos was so widely prized was that it was flexible, strong and resistant to heat. Over its lifetime of use in the United States, it was used in all manner of industries – from textiles, to construction to autos.

The problem with asbestos is its link to health problems and diseases in people that have been exposed to it. This type of deleterious condition that is linked to asbestos exposure is called asbestos poisoning.

Asbestos, left by itself, is not a huge danger to your health. But when it handled, moved or broken it becomes a potentially life threatening danger. The minerals that make up asbestos will quickly dissolve into tiny particles that will quickly become airborne and can be sucked into the lungs of unprotected humans or animals that have the bad luck to be in the vicinity.

Asbestos Poisoning Linked To Health Problems

In the early part of the last century, scientists began to note some similarities between people who worked in asbestos mines or around asbestos and their shortened life spans or deteriorating health conditions. It wasn’t until the 1960’s or 1970’s that asbestos poisoning emerged as a culprit in various diseases. Even now, more is being learned about asbestos poisoning than before. Once you have inhaled the asbestos fibers, they will then begin to create a bunch of different diseases and conditions but they will not show up right away. This is due to the fact that there is a long period of time in which the fibers insinuate themselves into the body and the disease lies relatively low under the radar. If the exposure is large, then the period of time that symptoms show up will be quicker than one in which there was a light exposure to asbestos.

Those people who worked with asbestos (either in the asbestos mines or worked in packaging asbestos to be used in various industries, as well as construction workers who were exposed to asbestos when building or demolishing buildings) will be the ones with the highest risk of asbestos poisoning.

Those people who didn’t work in these industries but lived with people who did are also at risk. This is called the “neighborhood exposure”. It is the same as the person who lived in a building where repair work was being done when asbestos was disturbed and sent airborne. The result to the lungs is similar to smoking. Those who worked with it have breathing difficulties and risk for cancer that is similar to smoking many packs a day.

Diseases Linked To Asbestos Poisoning

The three major diseases that are linked to asbestos poisoning are;

Asbestosis, Mesothelioma and Lung Cancer. Other diseases and conditions can also be attributed to asbestos poisoning. You will be able to learn more about all of these diseases and conditions by checking out other sources online.
