........."Ask what you can do for your country!"
59The Problem.
I've heard all the 'for and againsts' but what I want to know is how can anything be done without the funds. The popular idea is to steal from the rich and give to the poor and the middle class. The only problem is there aren't enough rich to carry us through the start-up much less maintaining of a national anything system. The initial cost and the cost to maintain any system will exceed anything we can imagine and considering how efficient government isn't this could ruin the best aspects of any system we currently have.
This America everyone should be able to see a doctor without the fear of bankruptcy. The young have to have a good start on life and the health of every child that is an American has to come first. Children of legal aliens should be included in this group as well, but; we can't afford to insure the world. The use of our medical facilities, by illegals, has brought alot to the brink of financial disaster. If we are going to make a move in the direction we have to control access to the facilities. They must be for those who pay , period.
Another problem we face is our countries need to better educate our young people. We have to find a way to get as many in college as possible to insure we are competitive with the rest of the world. This especially is true for China and India who are making education a major priority. There are too many bright young people in America that have little or no hope of college after high school. My generation needed a high school diploma and you were ready to work. Our young people need college to enter the work force anything less dooms them to a survival existence. At this level they would have very little hope for affording health care as it stands now.
People with a college degree make more money. They buy more goods and use more services because they have income and stability. They pay more taxes that keep our infrastructure on the new end of the scale versus the crumbling end. So much of our growth as a nation depends on new sources of income. People with better incomes buy better homes which stimulates growth in all construction related industries that employ millions of Americans. The benefits are huge and to get the minorities involved only helps them to realize they can do better and they don't have to settle for a life without dreams. We all win with well educated Americans.
This social issue is one we owe our elderly American neighbors. We have to make sure no elderly person goes without food or shelter, anything less is criminal. They need the healthcare they deserve. No loop holes, no promises just assurance that they don't have to live with pain. If they are not capable of caring for them selves they should be cared for. This should be done without government rationing or deciding who lives or dies. Our elderly deserve to finish their lives with dignity and not be made to feel they're a burden.
There should be help for families who choose to care for an elderly loved one. It should be easy for them to afford equipment and prescriptions. There should be clean and safe homes for elderly who can't stay with family or have no family. These homes should equipped to handle the elderly whose needs exceed what a family is capable of providing. They should be staffed with well paid professionals so their focus is on providing quality care not worrying about how will their families survive. We have to take care of our elderly so no one has to worry about what will happen to me when I can't help myself.
Where to begin.
The first thing that needs to be done is to identify the problems and acknowledge they exist. In our case it would serve us well if everyone was on the same page. The solution to any problem will first have to be clearly defined by all parties and accepted as problems. It won't do any good if one group says there's no problem and the other says there is . Another issue is the name calling, this includes references to socialism and communism because they are a considered fighting words. Any program to work effectively would mean everyone has to work, no free rides. If a person doesn't choose to participate they must provide for themselves and we have to hold our ground. We can't give in to or make exceptions for those who have chosen to not participate.
We have some big problems on the horizon no mater what we choose it will require change and if that change produces results great if not we have to be flexible. I don't believe we can afford to just provide everything with out some return on our investment. The cost for any program that will include all Americans will be enormous so the effort will have to exceed any in existence. It will take a rethink on our country, its direction and potential. Any change on this scale will have to come with an understanding that there will be glitches. We have resist the temptation to point fingers and add blame. It's important to move in well calculated stages so we allow enough time for adjusting the system. There should be grandfather clauses to insure those in need can still stay on track with as little disruption as possible. We will never reach any of our objectives if there are lapses in coverage through the transition.
The Plan
The key to any plan to cover these expensive issue must come from the hard work of those who don't have healthcare, tuition or retirement. They must provide sweat equity in to a national service program that will allow them to earn credits towards what they need and the additional manpower can go towards infastructure, border observers, hospitals, daycare, helping the elderly, and working in our national parks. These credits would be accepted as barter for healthcare, cover student loans and retirement. This would also ensure the money comes from services provided I'm not proposing a welfare system they don't work. I feel we need programs that unite Americans in a common cause to improve living standard of all Amricans.
We have to insist that to participate you must contribute your sweat to earn credits towards what you need. A medical student needing money for med school could repay from his own pocket or work in the healthcare system a weekend a month and two weeks a year. This would be similar to our National Guard and it also could be included into the system as well. Those who work in our National Guard could and should be used along our borders north and south. Others could work in retirement homes helping the elderly or working with state and local governments with construction projects. There are so many possibilities the opportunities for success are endless.

So is it Robin Obama, Barak Hood, or Obama Hood?
Spread the wealth = steal from the rich and give to the poor, than sounds about right as you say.
Keep on Hubbing!
"The popular idea is to steal from the rich and give to the poor and the middle class. The only problem is there aren't enough rich to carry us through the start-up much less maintaining of a national anything system."
"Poor" Bill Gates ... he's first on my list but he's worth 40 billion. Warren Buffett is at 37 billion, Lawrence Elliston is at 22.5 billion. The Wallmart 'crew' now: Jim Walton 17.8 billion, Alice Walton, Christy Walton and S. Robson Walton are all worth 17.6 billion each. Michael Bloomberg is at 16 billion. Charles and David Koch are each at 14 billion. Wow, there are so many more ...
I am getting bored and there are too many ruthless scum with billions and billions of dollars to mention. The tables always turn though. I have faith.
There is enough food for everyone on this planet but when some take too much others are left with little and lots of other people die of starvation: "Every day, almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes--one child every five seconds. 2" - quote taken from bread.org.
In a world were natural resources are limited one should not be allowed to take all for himself or herself even if he/she could for whatever reason.
I didn't want to be so broad. I wrote this awhile ago but I had to think on it more. Trying to think of a way to fund these difficult issues. Your input is smart and allways appreciated. Thanks!
Mr happy we have sent billions to poverished countries, to no avail. Question: Don't you think the very rich give to charities if for nothing else but tax write offs?
Mr. Happy, Thanks for stopping by! Look you'll never sell that to the American people. Everybody hopes for success someday to draw aline on dreams is to remove all color and only have black and white. People shouldn't be punished for success and people shouldn't be punished for being average and thats what I'm proposing. A system that protects all Americans through their own hard work, no give-aways.
I would not contest the fact that the United States provides crucial aid all over the world. That was not what we were talking about though.
We live in a world where the resources are limited - that is a fact. Now, if all these billionaires and not only these but all other billionaires from all over the world decide one day to buy all the land around fresh water lakes and rivers and then, they decide not to share the water just because they can. What would happen? This is obviously a very extreme example but I am trying to say that we have to have limits in everything. Too much is too 'much'.
I have never heard of a coffin with pockets ... why would one need billions of dollars in a life-time?
I think most donations by millionaires or billionaires are for tax benefits. There are those "famous" or "rich" people who actually get involved with NGO groups and those make their voices heard so I believe their donations are genuine.
And I am "selling" this to the American people, to all people for that matter - that is not in question.
Excellent Hub, well written, clear, and well thought out...As an Objectivist I find myself wondering why folks are so concerned with others that have had the same freedoms and equality of opportunity to acquire personal security through wealth or cultural enrichment...Most of the folks I associate with work hard and have zero time to to worry about having the government take care of them...they are too busy making things happen...People are not equal in aptitude, intelligence, or drive...They are equal in opportunity and freedoms...That is the gift of America...Free minds, and free markets...Larry
Hey Mr. Happy, You are right the amounts of money some people make is obscene. I'm a firm believer that the owner should show some moderation and be as willing to raise the standard of living of those who gave their lifes work to help him/her so they could be successful. Does the owner deserve the lions share, absolutely! Could they have done it on their own not a chance! I do have some issues with the control of natural resources that should belong to all Americans but thats another Hub. Thanks again for your honest opinions they are appreciated.
Hey Maven! As usual you share the true American spirit and I'm sure you're motivated by whats good for America. We are the same way we never even considered someone helping us even when we sat on the end of our bed asking our selves,"What are we going to do?". We just got with the program took the hit and moved on. You're welcome here any time, thanks.
Let's not get misleading here. A lot of the starvation happens in countries with evil leaders. We send help, the intercept the goods and not allow the people to have. There is plenty of food around.
Keep on Hubbing!
Eovery , how right you are and it is sad.

Wow you covered a vast range of issues. Education is the key. We are back paddling for a while, but there is a light somewhere at the end of the tunnel. Good Hub.
