Ask the Doula
Hello reader,
I do not know how you found me but you did! YEAH for the internet! Well I am writing this blog to help answer pregnancy questions and to help people research answers so they can come to one place and get all different sides of an issue.
I am just beginning so bare with me. I have a lot of research to post and great links to articles and such. Stay tuned to my twitter posts or what we call "tweets" and you will see when knew items are posted.
Any articles you have read or seen, or other blogs please let me know. The internet has a wealth of information and I spend hours looking for the "good stuff" on pregnancy, childbirth and raising a new baby.
Love to you all,
Sara
Goal of Pregnancy Information Nights
My name is Sara Hery; I am a new mother and doula living in Roseville since February this year. I have worked for an OB/GYN, I ran a midwives’ office & have been a doula for 3 years. I feel I am fairly educated on the support and options out there for expectant or new parents. Although, when I found myself needing support when I relocated to Roseville from the Bay Area I found it a daunting task to find childbirth professionals in this community. I have been motivated by my own experience to create a centralized monthly public event to inform the pregnant & new parent community about all the support and options they have to help them during this time of their lives.
This first event begins with a presentation on basic pregnancy and birth information. There will be a panel of birth professionals: childbirth educators, doulas, midwives, RN’s, postpartum doulas, lactation consultants and hopefully an OB/GYN. The panel of professionals can elaborate on any of the materials presented in the presentation, as well as allow the guests to ask basic questions. After the Q&A session there will be a “Meet & Greet”, allowing the guests to ask individual questions and familiarize themselves with the professionals & their services. The goal of the entire evening is to inform the pregnant community about different views on the many options they have surrounding their pregnancy and birth.
Please understand there is not an underlying agenda to promote any specific birth option such as natural labor, breastfeeding or epidurals. Again, the goal is only to get the information out there from many sources so the expectant parents can make educated decisions about pregnancy and birth options. Hopefully we all agree the key to a healthy mom & baby is knowledge and that is what I hope to provide during this event.
Top 10 Reasons to Hire a Doula
1. A doula helps you to gain, regain, maintain or feign a positive outlook on your ability to handle your new role in life(i.e. mentoring, role modeling)
2. Hiring a doula means that the father to be must focus on you.
3. Hiring a doula frees the father to be from additional burdens of trying to understand shifting hormones, pregnancy jargon, etc. He is free to be the pillar of strength and steadfast support that you need at this time.
4. Hiring a doula decreases the risk of an unwanted epidural.
5. Hiring a doula increases your stamina, dominance, confidence and coping abilities. When you are at the end of your rope, a doula is there to help you to anchor knot your frayed ends and hold on.
6.Hiring a doula increases your chance of having a positive experience with breastfeeding/feeding routines.
7. When you have questions on childbirth, your new role, or have doubts and fears, a doula is a non-judgemental birth resource.
8. Doulas are your advocate, there to make you comfortable, and there to ensure that your wishes are respected and listened to, even if it is not possible to honour them at that time.
9. When your partner is not available, a doula is there. After all, birth should be an occassion when you have a supportive person by your side, to laugh, cry, share and listen.
10. Doulas give you the strength to labour on. When the going gets rough, a doula rolls up her sleeves and gets going to smooth out the bumps, help out with the learning curves and to ensure that both mother and baby are on the pathway to becoming a happy, contented dyad!</span>
