On 14 April 1865 the actor John Wilkes Booth shot the president of the United States Abraham Lincoln in the Ford Theatre in Washington, DC, killing him. The American civil war ended only five days before the surrender of Confederate General Robert E. Lee at Appomattox. Born in a cabin in Kentucky, Lincoln in 1860 was the first candidate of the Republican Party for the presidency. The election of an opponent of slavery had caused the secession of states of the South and, in April 1861, the beginning of the civil war. In 1863, when the situation was precipitated the federal, Lincoln had emancipated slaves in 1864 and was re-elected. It is considered by many the greatest American President, for having saved the union and having abolished slavery, as well as for the spirit and gifts oratorie.

This little object is the handmade ball of britannia — an alloy of tin, copper, lead and antimony — that John Wilkes Booth fired out of his Philadelphia Derringer on the night of April 14, 1865, into the head of President Abraham Lincoln.
