Asthma seems, over the last few decades, to have become one of the biggest health issues affecting the world's population; medical science has not yet been able to fully explain this continued rise although some good theories exist. Causing the airways to close up in reaction to allergens in the atmosphere, asthma is a chronic condition that can at least be treated. It is a respiratory condition that affects people on a daily basis and is serious enough to cause death if not dealt with in time.

Keeping a constant check on their condition is the most important step for an asthma sufferer. The severity and frequency of attacks will determine the course of treatment and these fit into three broad categories of prevention, relief and emergency treatment.

One form of relief for all patients is called a Bronchodilator which is designed only for less serious attacks but will be the only form of medication that mild sufferers will probably ever need. For people with mild persistent attacks, low-dose glucocorticoids, a mastcell stabilizer or leukotriene modifiers are to be taken in addition to relievers. In severe asthma cases, oral glucocorticoids may be added to these treatments during attacks.

Asthmatics must also identify the triggers that cause the allergic reaction in them and find ways to reduce or eliminate them. This particular respiratory problem has become to be recognized as a condition that is most associated with poor air quality and the reason why city dwellers are more likely to suffer.

Although the specific medications can help the situation it is far better if they can be avoided where possible. They can cause serious side effects if used on a regular basis such as impotence, liver damage, depression, even tiredness and dizzy spells. Increasingly patients with respiratory conditions are opting for more natural remedies that do not have side-effects. These are formulated to treat the condition and not the effects.

Catalysts are used to help reduce the strain on the system by calming it and thereby strengthening it over time. The catalysts contained in the natural medications are different as they do not have any side-effects so reduce the stress on the system naturally.

Other asthma sufferers are finding that breathing techniques taught by certain yoga disciples can also help their situation and promote good health. The best way forward for an asthma patient is to eat a balanced nutritional diet that will help restore the immune system that has taken a great deal of punishment. Natural medication can also be used that will not leave harmful chemicals in the system. It is most important that the sufferer learns to control their asthma condition.

The major issue that comes up, however, in trying to control asthma attacks is that:

1. Most drugs take the control AWAY from the sufferer.

2. The patient never does acquire the ability to really "control" the asthma attacks with simple breathing exercises and yoga. They are simply means to help deal with the attack when it does occur.

As such, the best way to overcome asthma attack is through home remedies. However, again, you have to be careful since more home remedies are not the end-all treatment they are often touted to be.

EDIT: As noted in my comment below, I've been looking through various alternative treatment options available today to asthma sufferer. As I said above, home remedies have been disappointing, and drugs and asthma management have some serious flaws. However, one of the options that I have been studying the results of is the natural supplemet based treatment. The best and the most reputable system that I have found so far that uses natural supplements extremely effectively is called Dramatic Asthma Relief Naturally.

I have posted a review to it here - Dramatic Asthma Relief Naturally. Please take a look.

I agree it's good to avoid triggers if you can, but that's not so easy for the many asthma sufferers who are sensitive to dust and pollens. It's also important to remember that asthma can kill, so drugs shouldn't be discontinued lightly. The dose in modern inhalers is so tiny that side effects are rarely an issue.

I've written a Hub on the subject.

Marisa, the focus is to firs tidentify the triggers. I'm very well aware that simply discountinuing all treatment (including drugs) is not a good idea. However, the issue is that of dependence. The idea is to phase out the dependence on drugs. I've been reviewing some of the treatment methods other than drugs available today and will be posting my choices soon too. I personally, as a biotech researcher have found supplement (natural) based treatments so far to be the best ones. At the moment I'm working to identify the system that is the mos affordable for most people and also the most effective. As I said, I should be posting my results soon.
