Astral Musing: Awakening The Dark Dreamer
53
Almost 7 years ago, I experienced an uncharacteristic desire to learn about astral projection. After much internal debate, I picked up a guide at the local library and diligently followed the suggested exercises. One aspect involved stimulating my chakras and it triggered an enormous change within me that continues, even now. It exposed me to incredible new thoughts, ideas and concepts that I had never imagined, even in my wildest dreams. Shortly after the results of my efforts became evident, my search led to many other metaphysical areas of study and my life's direction, quite honestly, changed dramatically.
Poetry has been a part of my life from an early age. Often, I couldn't understand why a recurring phrase or idea would continue to circulate in my conscious mind but I did learn to take advantage of them, when they appeared. The only solution was to sit down with paper and pen and allow my imagination free rein. After my "awakening", the content of my writing changed totally. My creativity and imagination seemed to be instantly charged and scenes and images would appear while in trance, through my dreams or become stimulated by seemingly innocent events.
The poems below are among my first efforts, after my "awakening", and some are a complete mystery, as to their origin. Others came to me like a forgotten memory and I could somehow feel myself as either active participant or outside observer. In them, you will find a sampling of magick, nightmares, angels, demons, spirituality and travels out of body - in ways you won't soon forget.
Creativity Quick Tips
At the conclusion of each poem, you will note this small addition. These are all tools that have been learned over several years and have greatly enhanced not only my writing ability in general, but my creativity and imagination as well. Each of them includes my personal application of the tool - not to proclaim my "greatness" but to give you an idea of how to use it effectively. You likely won't find all of them helpful but I strongly urge you to keep an open mind and experiment a bit. These tools can be modified as you choose and there is no right or wrong way. As writers, we all encounter times of "imagination drought", where we find ourselves with the framework for a great novel or poem but arrive at a stuck point - and I am no exception. From personal experience, they have all assisted me and there is an excellent chance they will do the same for you. None of these tools are overly time consuming - some require as little as a few seconds during your day - nor do they require intense meditation or special equipment. One essential ingredient, however, is a willingness to experiment and not give up after only one attempt. Seldom do we learn a new skill after only one try, especially if we find that it holds some potential or benefit in reaching our goals.
The last suggestion is to be gentle with yourself. As writers, we are often on deadlines - both personal and professional - and that stress can actually hinder our ability to access our true creative genius. Grant yourself the same compassion, understanding and patience you would to another, in the same position.
