Asus Eee PC:701 to present

Eee PC: Day 1
The first Eee PC offering from Asus came in the form of the 701 model. Launched in October 2007, this netbook featured minimal specifications designed to target an emerging market: Ultra Low Cost PC's (ULCPC). The initial statements from Asus suggested that the Eee PC 701 would launch with a starting price of $199 and range up to $399 but upon release the first model sold for $249. In order to deliver a low cost computer Asus stripped the device back to barebones:
- 7 inch screen
- 2Gb Solid State Disk (SSD)
- 64Mb RAM
- Xandros Linux (customised for easy navigation)
From day one, Asus had planned to launch a Windows XP derivative. However, in order to keep prices low, this option was slated until a later date. Future revisions of the 700 series saw improvements including larger storage capacity, increased memory and the inclusion of Windows XP as an installation option.
Eee PC 900: Higher Specifications for the masses
The next leap from Asus was the Eee 900 series. Officially launched on April 16, 2008 this next variant featured a range of improvements and a larger price tag - £329 in the UK (approximately €410, USD 650 including VAT). In the Eee 900, Asus finally met consumer demands for an ultra portable computer taht could run the Windows XP OS. Other improvements included a multi-touch trackpad that allows two-finger scrolling and zooming via a "pinch" gesture. The 900 series of netbooks are slightly larger than the 70x range but still manage to pack an impressive array of functionality into the 225 × 165 × 35 mm (WxDxH) chassis. The 900 series weight also jumped slightly: 0.92 Kg for the 70x to 1Kg for the 900.
The Linux variant of this new range has been labelled the EeePC 900 and features a 16 GB SSD, a significant improvement over the early days of 2Gb! Like the 701, some of the 900 series Eee's ship with a 4 GB SSD installed (much like the 701); this gives a a total, native, storage capacity of 20 GB. Models that do not include this additional SSD are referred to as the Asus EEE 900 16G.
The EeePC 900 Win comes in two versions:
- 12 GB (one 4 GB SSD and one 8 GB SSD)
- 16 GB (on a single SSD)
Due to the cost of licensing XP, the Linux 20G retails for the same price as the Windows 12G version. The Windows variant of the 16G EEEs actually costs more thatn the Linux version! Apart from the pricing and some proprietary software, the two Eee PC 900 models are identical:
- 1 GB of RAM
- 8.9-inch (226 mm) 1024×600 LCD
- 1.3 megapixel webcam
- Celeron CPU (same model as the 70x series but running at 900 MHz clock speed rather than 630 MHz)

Eee PC 90x: Asus goes into frenzied mode!
Less than two months after the launch of the Eee 900 came the next iteration; the 901. Rather than a completely new device, this new netbook was simply an improved addition to the 900 range. New features include the Intel Atom Diamondville CPU (running at 1.6GHz) plus a upgraded battery and power management features: 6-cell battery combined with "Super Hybrid Engine" power management software which delivers a battery life of 4.2 to 7.8 hours (depending on the load placed on the Asus netbook). Other much requested extras include Bluetooth and 802.11n Wi-Fi (wireless connectivity). Although the Eee PC 901 did not ship with Windows Vista installed the list of hardware upgrades shows the inclusion of the Intel 945G SE chipset - this meets the suggested requirements laid down for the running of Aero. In addition, the 901 is also capable of using a 3G data card making it an ideal candidate for mobile workers.
The 901 was quickly followed by the Eee 904; the first Eee PC model to come with a standard HDD (80GB) rather than the previous iterations which have used.an SSD. The first models featured an Intel Celeron M running at 900 MHz and were powered by a 6-cell battery. As per previous models, the 904 features 802.11 b/g WLAN and a 1.3M pixel webcam. The device can have either Linux or Windows XP Home Edition pre-installed.

Asus launches the 10 inch Eee PC
On the same day as the 901 launched, Asus unveiled their new 10" netbook: the Eee PC 1000. The 10-inch screen and 1.6 GHz Intel Atom CPU have been viewed by many industries analysts as an attempt to break into the highly lucrative corporate market. The primary consumer target of this netbook being the mobile worker.

In September 2008 came the 1000HD an equally impressive netbook althought the machine runs the 900Mhz Celeron CPU making it a cheaper option for potential buyers.
The 1000HA was released in October 2008 but costs less than the 1000H even though it carries the same Intel Atom 1.6 Ghz CPU, 160 GB HDD, and 1 GB of RAM.
