Use Asus eee pc as a desktop computer
76Desktop eee pc
Still haven't found a reason to buy the famous Asus EEE PC? I'll give you another good reason why?
Ok, this EEE PC may be great for traveler. But, if you happend to spend most of your time stay at one place, then, working with its small 7inch screen could make your eyes sore.
Did you know that EEE PC can also use as a full desktop computer? With this feature, you can bring your eee pc when traveling without hurting you back, and when you are home or at work, you can hook it to external display, full size keyboard and a mouse. The video adapter inside eee pc can hold up to 1024x768 screen resolution. Serving a big 19 inch widescreen monitor is no sweat for eee pc.
Ok, here's how to do it.
1. First, i think its better to close the lid and turn of the EEE's screen while working as a desktop PC, this will clean your desk, and make it more like a traditional mini desktop pc. But, EEE PC will go to stand by mode if you close the lid. You can make it stay on while the lid is closed by editing file /etc/acpi/lidbtn.sh. Just open the terminal (crtl+alt+t) and write "sudo kwrite /etc/acpi/lidbtn.sh" Edit the the file looks like this
#!/bin/sh LID_STATE=`cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state | awk '{print $2 }'`
if [ $LID_STATE = "closed" ] ; then # /etc/acpi/suspend2ram.sh fi exit 0
safe and exit.
2. Now, connect your EEE PC with external monitor, usb keyboard and mouse.
3. Got to extended desktop setting. Click external desktop only, and choose manual setting to screen resolution. Pick the one that suit your external monitor. Click ok.
4. Now you can close the EEE's lid and you're done. You have a new desktop PC :)

yeah, i heard that too.
The tricks works for both Windows XP and Xandros Linux. The Windows trick is better i guess, because it use a special driver. While a Xandros solution is a bit impractical from my perspective. They use a a virtual machine to render a higher resolution screen.
But, i haven't follow the current progress. They might have come for a better solution today.
Does the patch work only with Linux or with XP as well, if installed.
It only applicable for Linux.
But, you can do it in Windows XP. Go to Control panel, and click Display properties. Inside, click Screen Saver tab, find "Power" button on the button. You can set various power scheme here, including make your eee pc running whenever the LCD is folded.
