PG-13 Issues

I am a firm believer that I am the ultimate authority in what is and what is not good for my children. In the case of movies, be aware of the material ahead of time. By the time the first movie had been available I had read the first several books to my son, not because he was incapable but because it gave us a common ground - something many parents feel they lack with their children.

With movies, I research them as much as possible before deciding if we are going to see them in the theater or wait for DVD release. Though with the advent of better and better quality of home theater equipment, it's become a lot more comfortable and convenient for us to opt for DVD releases. This also allows me to pre-view the movie before allowing the kids to watch it.

All in all, trust your own judgement. If the movie is one that you question the moral value of, let that be your guide. Do keep in mind, however that eventually your children are going to develop their own tastes and a strong will that is all their own, and no doubt it will run contrary to your desires. It's all a part of growing up.

Thanks Mirloc, for answering my request. My husband has read some of the books to my daughter because they enjoy reading together as well. I think the books / movies get much darker as the story continues, so I am not sure yet if I will allow her to watch the movies that are rated pg-13. Thanks for the advice :)

by definition, PG means parental guidance. so its up to a parent's discretion if he/she will allow their child to watch PG 13 movies. as long as the guidance is there, then that's all that matters.

My website on Beliefnet is designed to help parents determine which movies are appropriate for their families. PG-13 is the no man's land of the rating system with some almost-R's that are very raunchy or violent. Your best bet is to find a reliable guide and check with other parents.
