If you are new to the whole rational thinking world and just exploring what being an Atheist means, you may not be aware that Creationists (those that believe in creationism or that a god (the Christian God) created the universe and every thing in it) believe that everything that has ever lived on this earth were all created at one time. Scientists however know better by just looking at the geologic column. The geologic column is earth's accumulated layers of sedimentary rock. The layers are created from top to bottom with the oldest layers at the bottom and the youngest at the very top. Inside these layers are where fossils are found, the oldest species being found toward the bottom, etc.

According to creationists the geologic column was not formed by millions of years of sedimentary pile up, but by a massive flood referred to by the Book of Genesis. Here is why this doesn't make sense to us rational folks: If God created all life at the same time, then the geologic column should show all the fossils at the same point in the geologic column. Instead exactly the opposite is shown. Simple single cell life is found at the very bottom and through millions of years at the very top you have humans.

But the creationists do not stop there. In order to answer this question so that it makes sense in their minds they claim that during the great flood that the fossils were sorted into the geologic column from the least sophisticated to the most. They explain that when God created the forty days of rain, the most primitive forms sunk to the bottom of flood water and the humans, the most developed were smart enough to climb to the highest mountain tops and wait it out. The mammals were faster than the reptiles, so they got a little higher up the mountain than the reptiles, etc. etc. and so forth.

Well I am sure all you readers can see the flaw in this "reasoning". What about the life forms that were in areas without mountains and on flat plains with nowhere to run? Those forms are still sorted exactly the same in the geologic column as in areas where there were hills and mountains. But according to the story creationists try to create, these plain dwellers should all be found in the same layer in the column, but they are not. They out do themselves with their own explanations time and again.

But wait, now they claim that different life forms have different abilities to float and that related animals float with the same consistency so they drown at near the same levels, explaining the sorting in a different way. UGH! Really?

The Theory of Evolution is consistent with what is found in the geologic column. And I still don't understand how fish drown in a flood before reptiles in order to be found in an earlier layer than reptiles. Oh and by the way, the theory in Theory of Evolution does not mean it has not been proven, do a little research to understand what a "theory" really is and you will soon see you cannot use that word against us!
