Buckhead is a beautiful, trendy area of Atlanta with woods, gentle hills, and high-rises, located just north of Midtown. It’s famous for its nightlife and restaurants. As a matter of fact, there are more than 100 restaurants in just a 2.5-block area. “One of the top ten affluent places in the nation," Buckhead is home to numerous boutiques and the sophisticated Phipps Plaza and Lenox Square Mall. Many, many condos are available in Buckhead, and with the economic downturn, this is an excellent time to buy. Below, I’ve included a wide price range, from $125,000 to $3 million, just to give readers an idea of what’s available.

The View at Chastain: Located at 3820 Roswell Road, these condos were built in 1973. They feature a heated swimming pool, a sauna, a conference room, a glassed-in gym, a media room, underground parking, controlled access entry, and a rooftop patio. It’s pet friendly, too. Units have 12-foot ceilings, garden tubs, Silestone countertops, hardwood floors, large balconies, walk-in closets, and gourmet kitchens. Nearby are an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, restaurants, bars, a theater, a library, a drug store, a grocery store, shops, and of course, Chastain Park. Prices range from about $246,000 to $800,000.

Aramore: This building at 2255 Peachtree Road is six years old and offers a wide choice of floor plans and square footage. It’s pet friendly and has a walking path adjacent to Peachtree Creek. Aramore is convenient to parks, restaurants, bars, grocery stores, and a bakery, and it’s unusually quiet for its location. Also in the area are an elementary school, a middle school, a high school, and Piedmont Hospital. Prices range from $179,000-$419,000.

Skyline at Lindbergh: Located at 777 Morosco Drive, this 21-story sleek, Chicago-style high-rise was built in 2008. It includes a swimming pool with private cabanas, a fitness center, a clubroom, an outdoor patio, covered reserved parking, concierge, and a lounge. Lindbergh is one of the “hottest” areas in Buckhead. These one and two-bedroom homes, complete with balconies, will put you in the middle of restaurants, bars, and shopping. Check out the penthouses on the top two floors – they have up to 2,400 square feet and offer amazing views from the floor-to-ceiling windows. Prices range from $250,000 to $1 million.

The Vanderbilt: Located at 3071 Lenox Road, this mid-rise development houses 34 units, a swimming pool, clubhouse, excellent concierge service, a luxurious lobby, and pet-friendly areas. The condos are spacious and in walking distance from restaurants, bars, schools, a park, a library, a pharmacy, and shops. Prices range from $200,000 to $250,000.

Terraces at Peachtree: At 1 Biscayne Drive, The Terraces were constructed in 1982 and feature hardwood floors, open floor plans, a swimming pool, secured parking, a fitness center, and a clubroom. These condos have great views of the city skyline and the golf course. The mid-rise is in walking distance to restaurants and shopping, and is also near schools and convenient to Midtown and Chastain Park. These condos are very affordable for Buckhead and start at $125,000.

The Bradford: Located at 2160 Peachtree Road, this high-rise was built in 1986 in south Buckhead. It features hardwood floors, large balconies, kitchen upgrades, and extra details like trim and moldings. In addition, guests are provided with free parking. You’ll be close to plenty of dining, shopping, and entertainment at The Bradford. Antique aficionados might be interested to know that The Bradford is right next door to Bennett Street Antiques. Prices range from $125,000 to over $200,000.

Terminus: This is an ultra-modern high-rise at 3280 Peachtree Road on ten exclusive acres. Communal areas include a clubroom, a bar, an indoor/outdoor fireplace, grills, a catering kitchen, a game and media room, a saltwater spa, outdoor dining areas, and a dog park. Large windows provide stunning views of the city’s skyline. It’s close to MARTA, fine dining, schools, and upscale shopping. Prices range from $350,000 to $3 million.

Prices range from $205,000 to around $500,000.

Alhambra: Located on Peachtree Road, the Alhambra is somewhat like a Moorish castle. It has stucco walls, a tiled roof, parapets, and wrought iron trim. Built in 1927, the building has been completely renovated and was turned into condos in 2005. All units have hardwood floors, stainless steel appliances, beautiful cabinetry, granite countertops, tiled baths, columns, and recessed lighting. A raised walkway passes over the garden. A short walk away are a library, restaurants, bars, a drug store, a supermarket, a park, a school, and shops. One bedroom units start at around $75,000, and two-bedroom units average $200,000. Rental units are also available for $900 per month.

The 30-story high-rise was built in 2006 and features a pool, a club room, a billiards room, a landscaped terrace, a media room, a fitness center, and 24-7 concierge service. Each unit has ten-foot ceilings, granite countertops, floor-to-ceiling windows, stainless steel appliances, and large master suites. It's been years since I've been to Buckhead and, my goodness, how things change! I bought my first new car there in 1976. There were nice, exclusive neighborhoods on West Paces Ferry Road and rather ordinary homes on Piedmont Road. There was a great record store called Peaches Records & Tapes on Peachtree Road right at Peachtree Creek. I even knew people who raised livestock in Buckhead in the 1930's. Oh yes, the streets! Roswell Road, Pharr Road, Morosgo, etc.

Thanks, guys. Yep, if you stay out of Hotlanta for more than a couple of months, you won't recognize it when you return! I remember Peaches Record Store! Think we're old, Pee Dee?

Habee:---No, we're not old. We're just wiser and more blessed. I used to ride a bus ( pre-MARTA and pre-air conditioning ) from Patterson's Funeral Home near Oglethorpe University all down through Buckhead and on into downtown Atlanta. I was safe, too! I was only a teenage kid, but my personal safety was never an issue. I guess that I'm getting a little too parochial.

Last time I was downtown on Marta, there was a shooting. Scary. That's the only time I had a bad experience, though.
